When Alice Mistlethwaite is shipped off to boarding school in Scotland it's nothing like she imagines. Run by the mysterious Major, there are no punishments and the students are more likely to be taught about body painting or extreme survival than maths or English!

Then Alice's dad goes missing and she must run away to find him. Can she persuade her new friends to help?

So begins an epic quest across wild Scottish highlands and islands, where friendships will be made and broken, lies will be untangled and the children will face danger and excitement at every turn.

Both hilarious and heartfelt, this is the classic adventure story brought bang up to date, and told in Natasha's inimitable voice.

Boarding school in Scotland differs from other schools: punishments for bad behaviour don't exist and lessons seems to be more adventures and interesting than normal subjects such as math or English. Three children get into trouble that will change their lives.
Watching this bunch of friends grow individually and as a group through their adventures was as rich and wonderful as the Scottish highlands and islands they walk and swim through.
The story is full of wonderful characters, but my personal favourite is Jesse. At the beginning he seems to be a shy boy who doesn't believe he's good in anything however when the story ends you learn he's the one you wish to be with if you face danger or need a good navigator!

I was delighted with the ending, which was not at all predictable. The whole story is exciting! The fast paced adventures keeps you wondering what will happen next to the children. Will they survive in a dangerous enviroment? Will they all find what they looking for?

It was defenitely great read and I can't wait to read another book by Natasha Farrant!

I'm really enjoying this book so far, i'll have to admit i'm only half way through but i was compelled to leave a review now while i'm still 'in' there. I've been poorly so only started the book tonight and i just haven't put it down.

I love the setting, the mixture of history and geography is great as i have never read anything set in Scotland before so it has really enabled me to get a sense of the place. So far my favourite character is Alice, she's just like me as she likes to write stories. I really felt for her in the first few chapters and that really stuck with me while i was reading.

I'll follow up once i have finished but so far it has a big thumbs up from me.

This was a great book about Alice Jesse and fergus’s adventures at some points it was really sad but some points it was hilarious some parts were about their back stories and some was about the adventure they were on. There were some betrayals but everyone got there own back in the end. The book helped me learn some scouting tips, I would recommend this book to children aged 11+.

We really enjoyed this book a good old fashioned adventure mystery story.  About three children who meet at boarding school but have a great adventure.  There were lots of twists and turns to keep me guessing as a grown up reading it to my children.  Great if you like famous five stories.

A great story set in the Scottish Hughlands. 3 pupils put together for the great orienteering challenge set off but end up on a big adventure. In search of an island with a Castle to meet her missing Father. Following many twists and turns they reach their destination only for Alice to discover the truth about her dad. A great read about friendships and discovering who you really are.

This book is a super read  - I love the characters and how they relate to each other. The jealousy and natural selfishness evident alongside their friendship. It is a great adventure story with permission to bend the rules allowing the children to determine their own path.  I love that in this book the children are such strong characters and it is an adult who lets them down. They are brave and honest - despite their reactive jealousies. I can't wait to share this book.

I loved this book because it was very creative and it was a really cool adventure.
The characters were adventurous even though their personalities were very different from each other. Jesse is a boy who hardly ever breaks rules but this story shows a different side to him. Fergus is a trouble-maker and thinks he doesn’t have any special talents, until this adventure shows he has a talent for map-readinf and friendship. Alice is the main character and she is a completely ordinary girl who decides to break a few rules and make an everlasting friendship.
This book made me feel like I wanted to have a similar adventure!

I couldn't put this book down! From start to finish it had me hooked and it was hard to predict what would happen next. I like how it gives the reader a life to consider - living away from home and family and having to build friendships and independence. The main character shows bravery and determination throughout the book which is inspiring to read. I would recommend to mature children in Year 5/6.

*Teachers/parents - please note there are several parts where swear words in dialogue have been replaced with astrix. You may want to select who this would be appropriate for*

The story is about friendship. Alice meets Jesse and Fergus when her aunt enrols her at an unconventional boarding school in Scotland. It does not take long for them to get into trouble and embark on adventure across the scottish highlands. I have enjoyed it, it's lovely to read a book set in the Scottish Highlands and Islands.

Good book.
I really enjoyed Children of castle rock, The old-timey feel set in modern times. The characters were well written as well as the surrounding area.

If you like Enid Bylton style books this is the one for you, it is an adventure and mystery Book.

The only thing it could improve is the description of the school and grounds, exploring them more, and I think it would do well as a series.
