I chose this book in the library for my 6 year old. Perhaps a bit on the younger side for her but as she remembered fondly "The tIger who came to Tea" by the same author, I thought it was a good idea. We read a page each and discussed what might happen. The theme is very similar to the tiger who came to tea and she loved the illustrations on te book.
This is a story of a little boy who is ill and can't go to a street party. He tries and suggest a number of what ifs which his parents rebut. He is very disappointed not to go but ends up on an amazing adventure doing all the things he was supposed to be doing at the party. We loved the ending.

Beautifully illustrated and clear language.

Read this to my two boys who were both enthralled throughout. How silly! Said my eldest boy, when the young boy in the story said about a crocodile under the bed and then a crocodile appeared!

We then got transported to a party in the jungle where the boy gets to have birthday tea and go on rides.  The rides are courtesy of the animals and gives you some beautiful descriptions of the actions animals carry out.

Overall a very enjoyable book!

For me the start of the book was too repetitive with the sentence starters but this didn't bother my boys.

This is a lovely book which we discovered after looking for other Judith Kerr books as we love the Tiger Who Came To Tea so much. It’s about a little boy who is too poorly to join the rest of his family at a street party. Despite this he gets to go on an adventure with the crocodile under the bed into the jungle for his own private party. The illustrations are lovely and my daughter particularly likes the first party page with all the animals. It’s a really sweet story and a nice bedtime read. My four-year-old really likes the beginning bit where Matty keeps repeating himself – she loves to join in.
