I was not sure what to expect with this book in terms of size, story content, and perhaps most importantly build quality - it was so unlike anything I had come across before. It didn't disappoint! The children (aged 4,3 and nearly 2) and I are all so impressed. I read the book to them initially without letting them know the surprise that was at the end. They listened attentively to the story as it developed, with its fantastic use of despriptive words and the narrative closely following the race cars around the track, building the excitement. They looked out for and pointed out all the landmarks described in the book, from the start line to the ambulance waiting, the boats watching, to the finish line. At which point, they were asked to decide if the car had won the race. They watched as I unfolded the book and started to Velcro various pieces together, a process which was perfectly simple and straightforward and soon they could see the finished result- their own car! I handed over a number plate which had been sent to us, personalised with my eldest son's name. He was so happy and recognised straight away what it was, before offering the two blank number plates to his siblings so that they could decorate and join in the fun. I was blown away by the quality and size of the car once built - the fact it can be (and has already been!) repeatedly turned from a book into a car with a door and windscreen is brilliant. It is a beautifully decorated and sturdy version of every child's favourite part about getting new toys - getting to sit in the box and pretend they're driving. They all loved the fact that they could brum their way to the finish line and win the race, creating their very own personal ending to the story, which they felt a part of from start to finish. And if that wasn't enough, once they had completed their "race" I lay out the book and the track slotted together to make the perfect play mat for their millions of tiny cars. 5 out of 5, for an imaginative, unique and captivating book and experience - quite literally, hours of fun.
