After watching Disney's Beauty and the Beast on repeat throughout the summer holidays we were very excited to receive this book.
It tells the tradtional story of Belle, a young girl who loves books, and the Beast, who lives alone in a castle. The beast treats Belle kindly but she refuses to marry him until she has seen her family again. When she returns the Beast is dying, but after she agrees to stay with him the spell is broken and the Beast is transformed back into a handsome prince. There is less drama than the Disney version, but my 2 and 4 year old recognised the basic, underlying story.
It is beautifully illustrated, with soft drawings in muted shades which add a whimsical nature to the text. It is also a nice length to read at bedtime, without getting the children too excited.
I have given this book 3 stars, as although it is a lovely story, my two children prefer other versions that we own, and this isn't a book that they choose regularly.
