Peppa and George are getting dressed as their favourite books at nursery for World Book Day (this story is one of the £1 books under the voucher scheme). George goes as a dinosaur (obviously) while Peppa resolves she has 6 favourite books and takes elements of each into her costume. At nursery the children are asked to guess who everyone has come as .... and obviously they struggle with Peppa's costume.... but together work it out.
Things I didnt like: (i) None of the characters are drawn holding/reading books (the pile of Peppa's 6 favourites is shown on one page), so the emphasis is on "dress up" rather than reading (ii) Some of the books referenced don't exist (eg The Red Monkey, Candy Cat in Boots) so their inclusion doesn't act as a "prompt" to go and read them...("lets read Peppa's 6 favourites and see if you agree"). (iii) None of the children really explain why they've picked these characters to dress as / talked about why they like that story, (iv) the pigs are told by their parents they can "dress up as our favourite books" which I thought was confusing, that it should have been clearer that they were to dress up to represent "favourite characters".
My daughter turns 4yr in April and showed very little interest in the book. She's never seen the TV programme, so doesnt benefit from familiarity with the characters etc that might have helped "hook" you in.
I think the "BEAR'S HOUSE OF BOOKS" by Poppy Bishop (which we also received on a Toppsta giveaway) is a much better promoter of reading / sharing stories, looking after books and sharing with friends.... use your £1 voucher towards buying that!!
