The abridged, junior edition of the story of Able Seacat Simon, beloved hero of the high seas. A must for Michael Morpurgo fans!

When an orphaned kitten is discovered in the Hong Kong docks in 1948 by a British sailor, he has no idea of the journey that awaits him. Smuggled onto HMS Amethyst and named 'Simon' by his new friends, the little cat quickly gets used to life on the seas and appoints himself chief rat-catcher.

When tragedy strikes, Seacat Simon keeps spirits up - but it's a long and dangerous journey back to England for the heroic kitten and his crewmates . . .

Inspired by real events, this is the story of 'Able Seacat' Simon's adventures and heroics in dangerous wartime seas, as told by the cat himself!

Young kitten Simon is surprised to find himself taken aboard a ship called "Amethyst" by his new friend. He is a supreme rat-catcher which makes the Captain happy as there are hundreds aboard. Simon has many dangerous and exciting things ahead of him. Will he survive this journey?
This was definitely one of my favourite books because I felt like I was on the ship myself with Simon the whole time. I loved how Simon was telling his own story. A story about cats is perfect for me as I absolutely adore them! This book was emotional and very moving. I would recommend it for ages 8 and over.

It was the first time when we read a book seen through cat's eyes. Simon is discovered in the Hong Kong docks in 1948 and smuggled on board of Amethyst by a British sailor who takes pity on the lonely and abandoned kitten. The young cat quickly fall in love with his new ship "family", establishing himself as the chief rat-catcher. Loved by everyone (even a ship dog!) he feels that his life is amazing. Everything changes after an enemy's attack on the ship...
The story takes place during war time and all action happens at the sea. In spite of the fact that this is a children's book you can be really emotional reading it(especially when you love cats!) The descriptions of sea life was so brilliant that I felt like I was on board myself at times.
It is a wonderful read, really well written and I highly recommend it

This book was about a stray cat (true story) that one day gets pulled onto a ship by a young seaman to be a ratter. The book is about his adventures on the ship.
I liked it because the story is told from the cats point of view.

I really like this book because it was very exciting and quite emotional at times.  The story is told by Able Sea Cat Simon (otherwise known as Blackie) and covers his life after he was rescued at the harbour in Hong Kong by a sailor called George.  He was taken aboard the Amethyst and that's where his adventures began.  At first he was afraid but when he got used to it, he felt like he lived there. He was a ratter and he killed the King of the Rats. He made friends with the ship's dog called Peggy and many of the other sailors. Unfortunately the ship was attacked on the Yangtze River in China some of the sailors died and Simon was injured. The sailors looked after him and they eventually all returned to England. Simon had been so brave he was awarded a medal. The only cat ever to receive it.

This is a true story about a young stray kitten. The kitten is taken aboard the HMS Amethyst. Where he is give the name Blackie/Simon. He becomes the ships ratter. Unfortunately the ship is attacked and Simon is injured. This book is all from the cats perspective. It has highs and lows and is sometimes sad. A lovely read all about Simon life and what happens to him when the ship finally docks in the UK.

Able Seacat Simon by Lynne Barrett-Lee

When an orphaned kitten is found hiding on the docks in Hong Kong, he is smuggled aboard HMS Amethyst to become the ship’s cat, with the very important job of being chief rat-catcher. Based on real events, this is the story of what happened to the ship and it's crew while on a peace keeping mission during the Chinese Civil War, as told from Simon’s perspective.

A heartwarming tale of courage and companionship, highlighting the bravery of the men and animals of the British Navy, without ever feeling like a history lesson. The glossary at the end provides explanations of all the Naval terminology used throughout the story.

Thank you to Simon & Schuster for sending me a copy for my school bookshelf.
