Why should children learn about mathematics? How does mathematical discovery impact on their lives and the opportunities available to them beyond school?
Get Them Thinking Like Mathematicians! combines practical activities to help children aged 7-13 develop their mathematical enquiry skills, with insights into the attitude that mathematicians apply to their craft. The activities explore different working methods - such as how mathematicians tap into and develop their creativity and how they solve problems and deal with contradictions - and are supported by strategies for thinking to develop children's numeracy skills. The activities also encourage students to build speculation and reasoning skills in order to understand and express their opinions about all subject areas.
Katherine Milner, mathematics teacher and consultant, provides the key concepts and learning benefits of each strategy, along with a series of activities, extension ideas and useful links. Related resources can be found on the series companion website.
