This is a CD-ROM designed to build up your Chinese vocabulary, develop your reading skills and perfect your pronunciation. First choose one of three graded levels of vocabulary learning. You could start off with 100 words and some 80 Chinese characters; then move up to around 400 words and 400 Chinese characters; then end up with just over 1000 words and some 800 Chinese characters. At each level you have the great advantage of being able to set both pinyin and English on or off. You can set your own pace and vary the level of help that you need. The vocabulary is divided up into a total of 74 topic sections, all totally relevant to modern life (and to GCSE). When you have chosen a topic section to work on, the CD-ROM will test you on character recognition (either from English into Chinese or from Chinese into English) and on pronunciation. Listen to the Chinese voice on the CD-ROM and then record and play back your own voice. Using the speech recognition database developed by AISpeech in Cambridge, the CD-ROM will assess your pronunciation and give you a mark. Your results are stored so that you can monitor your progress.
And for a long-term memory test there is a Self-test Randomizer. Choose any three topic sections and you will be asked three questions at random. "Read, Listen and Speak" is the latest addition to the "Chinese Classroom" series of Chinese textbooks.
