The term global city, coined by American sociologist and economist Saskia Sassen in 1991, refers to international cities that impact the rest of the world politically, culturally, and/or socioeconomically. ""The Global Cities"" set directs students' attention to established world cities and newly emerging metropolises. Each book offers an overview of the city's history and explains why its location is significant. Contemporary problems - pollution, crime, lack of services, etc. - are pinpointed. Culture, economy, tourism, wildlife, transportation, and management are also explored. Photographs especially commissioned for the set provide fresh visual insight, and interviews with locals put a human face on the experience of those residing in each city. Full-color maps, charts, statistics, and a view toward the future add depth to this timely set.
