History comes alive in this incredible children's illustrated book about castles. Slicing through different areas of a medieval fortress, extraordinary views reveal the people busy inside, and preparing for battle as an enemy army approaches. Packed with facts, you'll find out what it takes to build a massive 14th-century castle, dress a knight in armour, or prepare a feast fit for a king or queen. From the drawbridge to the dungeon, Cross-sections Castle swarms with the people who keep the castle ticking over - the workers, craftsmen, and servants. And, as you pore over every page, look out for the villainous spy. Is he in the well... the keep... the moat? No? Keep looking, he's there somewhere! Back in print after 20 years, you can cheer on jousters, be entertained by a troubadour, and witness the gory details of a traitor's demise. This unique illustrated book for kids is not just the story of a castle - it brings medieval history to life.

This book has amazing illustrations, so detailed! We love looking at each picture and finding all funny things that are happening such as people going to the toilet or someone falling off the roof and landing in the moat! The book details all life of a castle from the Noble family, the prisoners and peasants to the knights, armies and warfare with simple easy to read text. You find something new each time you look at a page.

My son loves this book. It has incredibly detailed illustrations and there is so much information on each page. On each double page, one side is dominated by a large illustration which is labelled (a word and a sentence). Mostly this illustration is a cross section of a castle - looking at its interior life. On the other page, there is usually a couple of paragraphs about a particular aspect of the Castle (Defence and Siege, Food and Feasting, Entertainment etc.) and then lots of smaller images (Castle personalities, anatomy of the castle, feudal system etc.) My son was most amused by the fact that some invaders had tried to get inside the castle by route of the latrine shaft. Best section for him was the gory Munitions and punishment section. I will definitely have a look for more Stephen Biesty books (I think some of his previous books are to be republished later on in the year.)

This is a lovely book that is crammed full of information and beautiful illustrations to complement the facts.  It contains all you need to know about castles and will be a great reference book for any castles we visit over the summer holidays. I only wish we had this book a year ago when we were studying castles at school.

This book really fed my sons hunger for history, he loved looking at each detailed cross section of the castle and thought the illustrations were incredible.
It’s a really great book full of information and the layout of the illustrations really bring it to life. My son said it was the best non fiction book he’s ever seen. A definite hit, he couldn’t wait to take it to school to share the book with his classmates when they were talking about castles.

My 10 year old daughter absolutely loves this books. She likes to visit castles and  read about them later on. This is a brilliant resource for her to explore. It contains really detailed description of the construction of the castle as well as the life in this enormous fortress.  Every page is filled with the amazing illustrations and information from defence to entertainment. The cover is extremely well designed and grabbed our attention straight away.

This book is amazing! Every page is a peace of art and it can be a great present for all children interested in castles or history. I would also recommend it as the resource for schools - I think it would inspire many young readers.

A beautifully illustrated hardcover book with so many facts and details about Castles. Each page has a perfecty illustrated and very detailed section of the castle showing it's different functions, like defence, trading, prisoners, entertainment, and you'll have lines pointing to what each thing is. Every time we went through we spotted something new.

Also my son has just finished studying Castles at school - so he was happy to recognize some names he already learned and to see lots of additional things he didn't know yet.

Only thing is that the details are very small so for some items we didn't understand completely where the line was leading to, but I imagine we can try exploring it next with a magnifying glass  and my son will probably have fun doing that.

This is a fantastic book! We looked through all the illustrations for ages. They are all very detailed and there is so much look at. We kept pointing out different interesting things to each other. The facts on each page are really interesting but I think my little ones will appreciate that part when they are a little older. Superb book and highly recommended.

This is the only book you need for information about castles!
This book has an immense amount of information in it for everything possible to learn about castles.
The illustrations are great and help bring the different sections of the castle to life.
Each page is jam packed with castle information.
We have learnt a great deal and my children find the book very interesting.
Each page is bigger than A4 to fit the illustrations and text on.
My only negative is that some of the text is very small but needs to be to fit around the illustrations.
Definitely a must have book.

One of the finest children's education books I ever read, it's amazing artwork, solid layout and lack of romanticising (the siege scene is notable bloody and violent) made a great impression on young library-hunting me as a child and when I encountered it again in a charity shop in my 20s, I instantly got it. This book lent me countless hours of imaginative entertainment as a kid. Superb illustrations and detail.
