I really enjoyed Begone the Raggedy Witches, in particular the rhymes that the animals had to speak in. I thought Mup, the main character in the story, was strong and brave, yet extremely caring towards her baby brother and Crow.

I found the witches a little scary at the beginning but as I read further I actually felt sorry for them - especially Magda.

In general, it was a fantastic story and I look forward to reading the next two books in the Trilogy.

Read by Toby age 10. Toby made a YouTube video for his review https://youtu.be/gtkulGyFOrE
He loved the book. He felt the cover and title were misleading as he expected a boring book for girls but actually this was a fabulous adventure suitable for boys or girls and he has now found his third favourite author. We had actual tears when we couldn't find books 2 and 3 today in WHSmith!

This book starts out in the real world, after Mup's beloved aunty had passed away. But then she and her family, Mum, Dad, little brother Tipper and dog Badger, get caught up in Mum's past. Aunty's ghost comes back to help protect them against the raggedy witches who have come to take Mam away to the witch kingdom, where her mother is queen.

But then Dad gets kidnapped and the family have to cross the border to rescue him.

I loved the character of Mup. She stands up to the power of the witches and discovers her own strength. At the same time she is fiercly protective of her family. I admired her sense of what's right and wrong and commitment to doing the right thing.

This is a great adventure for anyone who loves stories about magic.

Originally I intended to read this book to my children at bedtime, but after reading the first couple of chapters, that I must say are incredibly engaging and beautifully written but unfortunately my kids decided that the book was a little too scary to be read at night!!
I however continued to read the story to myself and thoroughly enjoyed the tale. The author transports you into this wonderful magical world and I found the characters especially Mup intriguing.
I would recommend this book to young adults and older it’s a mesmerising take of good vs evil set in a magical land that grips you from the start. My 10 year old who has read the Harry Potter series has also enjoyed it, he just would recommend not reading it at night!!

I was gripped right from the opening chapter, the book is based strongly on a female character “mup” who has to begin her adventures trying to rescue her dad who has been kidnapped by the witches.

There are very little illustrations within the book.

It is quite an enchanting plot.

Book is very suitable for young adults.

I like the story line because it was about how families stick together. The characters really well thought out and you feel like you know them. I really enjoyed the book and would definitely read it again and have recommended it to my sister.

I like this book because it has adventure, mystery and magic. The only part I didn't like was the beginning because it was rather confusing. The characters are very fierce and also interesting. It made feel excited and thrilled.

I liked the atmosphere created in this book surrounding the lead character. It shows that there is both good and bad in society through the witches. It's an exciting story with kidnap, danger,  rescue, suspense and friendship. I can't wait to read the next book.

Writing this as mum. Now I enjoyed it - it’s abstract and in places confusing but very imaginative. DS, however, didn’t enjoy this - it’s pitched as Ireland’s answer to jK Rowling but it’s nothing like Harry Potter. This is really a fairy tale. So he wouldn’t finish it. The star ranking is for my reading. I can’t mark it down when it’s ckearly the wrong genre for my son, I just wish books wouldn’t claim to be like something that they aren’t.

It’s not often I read a fantasy book but I really enjoyed this one and will be reading the next 2 in the trilogy. It’s a bit dark and scary in places but I think it adds to the story and makes you want to read on.

This book was weird but I liked it. I didn't understand most of it at the start and I wasn't going to try and finish it but I am glad I changed my mind and read the whole book. The book is about a little girl called Mup who's dad is taken away. Mup and her family cross the border and enter the world that Mup's mum was born in. This book is so good and even though it is strange at the start keep reading it! My favourite part in the book was when Mup and Crow danced magic. Mup was my favourite character but I also liked her brother Tipper (especially when he was a dog) and crow. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone younger than 10 years because some of the bits were scary, sad and confusing, But anyone who is ten or older, doesn't mind people dying and likesfantacy would probably like this book.

What a fresh look at middle-grade fantasy! I've complained for ages about the "dead parent trope", and indeed we do have a missing parent here, but Mup has two adult main characters to guide her through this mysterious world. Both are flawed, both have their own agendas and it really underscores the weirdness of Witches' Borough to have previously-trusted adults acting so strangely. There are some really super secondary characters - I loved Crow and Tipper is adorable - and the villain is fantastic. Looking forward to putting this one in the school library and finding out what the kids think!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Begone The Raggedy Witches (I also thoroughly enjoy saying the title!), the first book in the new fantasy adventure series The Wild Magic, by Celine Kiernan. The descriptions of Mup discovering her magic are wonderful, and I really like Mup as a character - especially her relationships with those around her. There were lots of nice little touches that subtly subverted traditional fantasy tropes, which I really appreciated.

Highly recommended!

This wasn't totally for me. It's not the sort of book I normally read, having said that it was a well laid out with a good storyline.
Not sure I'll read the others from the trilogy but I have now lent the book out to my friend at school so I'll get her to leave a review too.

Unfortunately this book didn't really engage my sons and we didn't get further than the first chapter, however I think it would appeal to them as they get older, so I will try again when they are older.

It does seem like a lovely book, but maybe more suitable for older children.

I read this first expecting to pass it on to my 8 year old Harry Potter loving niece as it is described as 'Irelands answer to JK Rowling'.  It may be about magic but it is nothing like Harry Potter, this story is altogether much darker and more foreboding, not necessarily in it's plot but in the descriptive way this book is written.

From the off this story is confusing and unnerving and goes straight in at a mother being taken over and kidnapped by gliding witches, all seen from a childs perspective.  It took about 100 pages of feeling confused and tense before I started to enjoy the book.  That said, even through the confusion of trying to understand what was going on and why, the writing really draws a very vivid picture of the scenes and people and complex relationships going on.

Once the story became clearer I was strangely gripped to finding out what was going to happen.  The ending is both a good closure to this book and a set up for the next in the series. My main positive is the fact that the main character is a powerful, strong, compassionate, morally grounded young girl.  There are a lot of really positive messages that start to come through later in the story about family, friendship, believing in your own power and the strength within.  I really enjoyed those aspects of the story and I think young adults can take a lot from it, not least that their voice is important and thoughts valuable.

I would recommend this book but not for young readers, it is definitely for young adults and not suitable for children with a sensitivity to darker more scary stories.
