Both children really love Sloths. They are fascinating creatures to watch, we have seen them at Chester Zoo, so understand how sllllllloooooowwwwly they move.
This is a lovely picture book, the matte pages and muted tones match the natural forest setting. The illustrations are a delight, the characters/creatures are unusual, which is refreshing eg tamarin monkey (I think). The use of colour to reflect mood is great and has very clever touches like the letter box and leaf letters.
Samson is a very friendly, kind sloth but because he moves slowly and is helpful to others, he always misses the parties he is invited to! Fed up, one day he doesn’t stop to help others and is really a bit rude...he still misses the party and everyone is sad! His friends hatch a plan, but upset Samson again..until....!!
Lo was quite upset by the sad parts in the book (but is particularly sensitive to emotion in books) but was thrilled at the ending.
A story about staying true to yourself, not changing who you are to suit a situation...but changing outside factors can be helpful (cryptically trying not to spoil the story).
Highly recommended! 3-4 years+
