It's time for monkey business in this fifth outing for Teddington's wildest family, the Bolds!

The Bolds are very surprised to be visited by Fred's mother, Granny Imamu. She's travelled all the way from the Serengeti, and now she's here, she does not approve of what she finds. Hyenas, living as people - whatever next! Granny Imamu starts to stir up mischief with twins Bobby and Betty, encouraging them to get in touch with their beastly side at school.

And then the twins' teacher comes to the Bolds with a rather unusual problem: her grown-up son Jeffrey just isn't like other people. He's rather hairy, doesn't much like to talk, and loves to monkey about. If animals can become people, could it happen the other way around . . . ?

My 7 year old LOVES the Bolds books, and this one was no exception. The Bolds receive a mysterious visitor with a message for Mr Bold, all about his mum coming to visit. The family are very excited but will the visit go as expected? Imamu, Mr Bold's mum and the twins' granny, doesn't seem to approve of their new human ways and thinks they should become more like humans. And then there is the strange problem the twins' teacher has with her son. My son loves the jokes that are scattered through the text, and David Roberts illustrations really add to the fun of the story. As a parent reading the Bolds books at bedtime, I do feel they are a bit long, especially given the age group they are for - I found the World Book Day Bolds story much better paced. But my 7 year old thinks they are great, and he's the target audience.

What a delightful funny story. Hyenas living as humans & a human wanting to live as a chimp. All intermingled with lots of jokes. Grandma hyena comes over from Africa & gets up to lots of mischief before returning back to Africa where she prefers to live wild & free. It also puts over the fact that anybody can be whatever they want & if you really want something there will be a way to get it.
I read the first few chapters to my granddaughters & they thought it was hilarious. We didn't get time to finish it so I continued reading it & it was quite enjoyable. Some adult humour too. Worth a read.

What a crackingly fun tale this is from start to finish!  We've not read any of the previous instalments but that doesn't matter in the slightest as the book gives a quick introduction to the family. "The Bolds" are a family of hyenas masquerading as humans.  Dad, Fred, works in a Christmas cracker family whilst the two kids go to school.  When Fred's mum decides to visit from the Serengeti her wild habits threaten to blow their cover.
Fred's occupation gives plenty of opportunity for cheesy jokes, there's a ton of fun illustrations and it really is a riot from start to finish.  We'll definitely be checking out it's predecessors!

We have been reading The Bolds books and this is another great one in the series. Fred Bolds mum comes to stay (it's fab how she gets here) and doesn't like that they are hyenas living as humans and she disrupts their way of life. The two kids love her adventurous nature and break the rules along side her. But one day, they take it too far!! My kids loved this book and we had to keep reading it. They loved that Grandma broke the rules, and loved the mischeif she got the kids doing. Made them laugh loads. Fred's jokes are great as always. Superb book. Highly recommended.

If you are new to stories about The Bolds, as we were, then this book has a great introduction that explains all about who they are. The Bolds are a family of hyenas living as humans. In the story this time the family receive a visitor from Africa, Grandma Imamu. The story has short chapters which make it easy to read, however there are 21 of them so it takes a little while. Leo enjoyed reading the story with words in different fonts and loved the jokes and illustrations throughout the book. "Mr Bold's Jokes" are repeated at the end too - just in case you missed any!
