Let Me Walk You Home

Let Me Walk You Home bravely and sympathetically takes on the topic of date rape--and speaking out about it--in a wordless but emotionally complex story. Debut author/artist Rachel Dukes uses the graphic novel format in a singular, striking way to create the story of a college-age girl whose recovery from an assault is complicated by the reactions of her social circle and her boyfriend--especially since his brother is the assailant. The art, with its clean lines, expressive faces and interesting framing, lends itself to both the serious events and the humorous moments and has clarity and impact without dialogue. The story introduces us to the girl and her typical life of classes, socialising, work and dating before she ends up at a party; then we are shown her life and relationships in the aftermath. The assault isn't the only plot point or theme, just as our heroine doesn't let it become the sole defining event of her life. The overall message is hopeful--Let Me Walk You Home is about finding strength in yourself and the supportive people around you.
