Whilst awaiting trial in the courts outside heaven an explosion in the skies causes some people to be returned to the earth. They fall to Tir na nA"g, the island of eternal youth and beauty; the island of ever present love, good food and sweet music where neither sickness nor death have gained a foothold. But the island is not as it used to be for it is now split in two and anyone who travels to the eastern side is fated to die. Two of the inhabitants decide to keep a diary and though they discover why the island is divided, the answer raises more questions. Questions are posed throughout the book. From the beginning the fallen have to contend with the possibility that God has been killed in the explosion? If so how should they live their lives? Can they end the suffering that they see on the island? Can they make the island a place of beauty, love and peace once more? But the diarists do not only raise questions they suggest some answers too
