The world is not as it seems for the l2 year old boy living happily with his adoptive father Angelo. Found on the beach when he was a small baby with nothing but a sign around his neck saying "Thomas Silent", and taken in by Angelo, Tom's life seems settled and secure. He is happy helping Angelo in his beachside tea shack, until one day - whilst he is alone in the shack - an eccentric figure going by the name of Phillimore turns up and shows Tom what he claims to be beads from a Mermaid's necklace. Thus begins this intriguing tale of magic, mystery, and adventure; although it is not until after Angelo's death, when Tom revisits the shack, that strange and inexplicable events begin to overtake Tom's life. An amazing night-time swim in the ocean leads Tom to find himself on a different shore and in a different world; a world ruled by one evil powerful man (known only as HIM) who holds the inhabitants captive to his will. The key to his magic power is the secret of the sea green Mermaids beads, and there is only one person in the world who can overthrow and thwart him...The young Thomas Silent.
As Tom, with the help of Phillimore, proceeds to uncover the secret of the Mermaid's beads, he also begins to discover who he really is, and the sacrifice he has to make to save both worlds. Superbly written by this highly imaginative and erudite author, "Thomas Silent" is a delightfully exciting teenage fantasy which flows along at a pace guaranteed to keep the reader engrossed from start to finish.
