Marcel, a French Bulldog, is a New Yorker through and through--he and his human know the best spots, especially in downtown Manhattan. But when a new human suddenly enters their lives at Central Park, they're spending all their time in uptown! Everything is changing and it looks like this new human isn't going anywhere. Why couldn't everything stay as it was? Why did things have to change? Find out what happens between this Frenchie and the new human in his life in a story where change can be good and bring new adventures! This touching picture book is a nice way to help a child understand a parent's new partner or spouse.

Jack loves dogs and has developed an obsession with New York so loved reading this story and finding out all about Marcels experiences in the city.

Marcel is super cute and the illustrations are beautiful.

This is a fun book about a dog and his human and their lives in New York, but suddenly there's a new man in his owners life and the dog isn't so sure about him.
This is a fun book and the illustrations are beautiful. My two little ones loved the dog's character and how it was written as if the his human was his pet!
I think it's a book that young children can identify with, especially if one of their parents has a new partner and the child isn't so sure about them. It gives a sense of reassurance.

Marcel takes readers on a 'dogs-eye view' trip around New York. It's narrated by Marcel, a gorgeous dog in a striped pullover, and tells the story of his life before, and after, a 'new human' appears. The text jumps around the page like an excitable puppy and there are loads of bold words that draw the eye. There are nods to famous landmarks and areas of the city. We adored the bright illustrations that capture the cool 'downtown' atmosphere brilliantly. It's really funny too (check out how Marcel deals with the new human's slippers!)

The theme encapsulated within this story is the introduction of a new person into the family - great for children dealing with a parent's new partner or sibling. The idea is sweet, but I do feel the book lacked content and flow as a reader. My two children found the book fairly amusing though, my nearly 4 year old was more interested in the illustrations than the narrative - he loved looking at Marcel's cheeky escapades. The illustrations are pretty bold and reminiscent of pop art, which I loved! A short, but sweet book. Not loved by me, but very much enjoyed by the little people.

Read this to my two little girls who both enjoyed what Marcel the little dog got up too around New York with his human and the new human. A lovely story about introduction a new person to the family and the illustrations are truly unique.

A very stylishly illustrated book including lots of recognisable New York landmarks. The story is of a little dog and his human and how life changes when another human joins their life. It would be a good book to read to a child who's parent has a new partner. My three year old twin girls quite liked the book and thought the dog was very cute. I think the book's use of style detracted from the story though, a case of style over content. One of my daughters was upset that you never saw the humans faces, just their feet, I explained that the story was from the dog's point of view. A nice book about emotions for the young.

This book is beautifully illustrated and i can see it being a real asset to a parent who has a new partner who is becoming part of the family.
However my daughter has not taken to the story at all (and she LOVES dogs) and I found it didn't flow very easily when reading it to her.

A story about a dog being uncertain of his owner having a new partner.  Lovely artwork but the story wasn't really for us.  I can see it may be of help for children whose parents may be separating/getting new partners, however, it didn't engage my two who haven't gone back to it after the first reading.  Thanks but no thanks sorry!

rsa read it themselves aged 6 aged 6

It is beautifully illustrated picture book about love and relationships told from the perspective of a young dog called Marcel.
My son, aged 6, thought it was 'babyish'.  However, he did think the page where Marcel was being naughty was rather funny, especially when he was weeing into  someone's slippers. Moreover, he said he 'liked the faces Marcel made'.
I would suggest the book is probably best suited for 3- 4 year old, who are still as interested in the pictures as the story itself.
