'There was only one thing for it. Calum took three massive steps forward and threw himself head first at the ball. At full stretch, he nodded the ball goalwards. It flew across the diving keeper and into the back of the net!
He lay for a second on the warm Astroturf smiling until a shadow appeared over him.
"I didn't know you could head the ball!" Leo grinned down at Calum with his arm outstretched.
"I didn't have much choice with a cross like that!" Calum laughed.'
Don't miss a minute of the non-stop action as 10-year-old Calum Ferguson struggles to settle into a new town whilst fighting for his place on the school football team. Scotland Stars F.C. books are packed with excitement on and off the field, as well as loads of extras like character cards to collect and football tips, puzzles and games.
Calum has just moved to Caleytown from the Highlands and is worried he won't fit in. That is, until he finds out from football-mad new pals Leo and Erika that a new boys' football team is starting at school. Calum is determined to impress the coach and make it onto the team, but two things stand in his way: a pair of decent boots, and the coach's son, striker Jordan McPride. . .

my 8 year old read this in 2 days!!! he took it to school for class reading and really enjoyed it. I told me that he loved the characters & how well calum did in his team even though he had just moved to the area, He was very impressed with the trading cards and showed his friends at school. He has asked for another one in the series for his birthday. It didn't seem as challenging to read as some of the books he reads so maybe suitable more upto 8-9 years.

Calum is football mad. He moves to a new to a new town and a new school, and gets into the football team there. I t was an enjoyable book, easy to read independently. It wasn't too long so took quite quickly to read and the chapters were a good length. There were also black and white illustrations throughout the book. Football is one of the main areas, but it also covered things like bullying, friendship and teamwork, so it seemed very real and I think a lot of children can relate to a lot of things in the book. Calum us such a nice character so you like him. I liked the font wasn't small, and I think it is a book that boys will prefer. There are other books in the series, and I have asked my mom to get me one, and the added bonus was the trading cards at the back of the book which you can collect.

This is a great book for the football mad child!  Calum is football mad and finds himself in a new town and a new school and a new football team.

Good underlining message of teamwork, friendship and overcoming bullies, with great illustrations to keep the interest.

Trading cards at the back of the book are a great idea and my son was very excited to find these!  Will definitely be looking at the rest of the series of books.

I read it to Eldest aged 8 aged 8 & to Youngest aged 6 aged 6
Calum's New Team 9781782502630

This book covers lots of themes; moving home, new school, bullies, not having the 'right' kit etc, wrapped up in an exciting football tale. I read it to our 6yo over a few nights and the 8yo read it himself in one sitting. Calum moves school and through football meets different people, has some run ins with his family and the other boys, all culminating in an exciting match.
We enjoyed this very much - we've read a *lot* of football stories in our time and this one managed to be fresh and interesting. I'll definitely check out others in the series.

When Calum moves he is worried about settling in at a new school where he doesn’t know anyone. To make things worse he quickly gets off on the wrong foot with Jordan the most popular boy in the class. Calum loves football and when he hears about a new football team for boys in his year gets excited. He finds out the team is run by Jordan’s dad. Will he manage to get on the team?

My son has just started reading this book, and so far so good. If your child loves football then they are bound to love this. It is ideal for kids who have started  reading independently.
