The Puffin Book of Fantastic First Poems edited by June Crebbin will absorb and delight girls and boys aged 5+. A great first poetry book; the poems span time, from Robert Louis Stevenson and Walter de la Mare right up to date with Roger McGough and Michael Rosen. Themes covered, such as mealtimes, playtime, animals, family and bedtime, really appeal to youngreaders. A truly lovely collection of all-time favourite poems. June Crebbin is an ex-primary teacher, now a full-time writer. She is in great demand for author visits and runs very successful writing workshops in schools. June has written a wide range of children's books and writes poetry for children and adults. She lives in Leicester.

This is one of Bellas favourite books. She took it to school to share on national poetry day and the children loved the alternative poems.

The children love these short nonsense poems and twists on traditional rhymes. Great for reluctant readers who only need to dip into the pages.

I admit I was somewhat dubious when my almost 3 year old pulled this from the library shelf. I did not think that a book of poetry would hold the interest of either myself or my little girl for very long. But how wrong was I? Each poem is like a little story which we can dip in and out of, and features a variety of different topics under several different themes. The wide scope meant that my daughter engaged with some poems that I wouldn't have thought she would have been interested in and so has widen our scope when looking for new stories to read. It uses humour and fun illustrations to engage and delight, featuring a mix of funny, traditional and modern poems. My daughters current favorite rhyme (which she finds hysterical and sings for everyone, even the postman) comes from this book Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Eating black bananas Where do you think he put the skins? Down the king's pyjamas.

I'm assuming that this book is the same as "The Booktime Book of Fantastic First Poems" by June Crebbin as I can't find that one to review.
This is the first library book my 3 year old chose from the nursery library and although I was a bit sceptical at first (how could we read poems at bedtime?) I have been proven wrong and my daughter thoroughly enjoyed them. A good selection of long & short traditional poems, haikus limericks etc by a range of poets. A particular favourite that had us laughing was The Awkward Child. "She fell into the bathtub, she fell into the sink, she fell into the raspberry jam and came out pink!" Think my daughter will remember that one for years as we tell it everyday :)
