Ruby is in charge of this book. And she'll tell you something right now. There are NO BEARS in it. Not even one.

Ella wants to tell you a story - a story with absolutely no bears. You don't need bears for a book. You need pretty things like fairies and princesses and castles and maybe funny things and exciting things. In Ella's kind of story, there are no bears in the village or the castle or the deep dark forest or faraway lands. But there might be ... a monster! Riffing on well-known fairy-tale themes, this fun-packed, offbeat story is perfectly matched by playful illustrations whose running visual joke will keep even bear-lovers smiling.

My daughter chose this book from the library today. It's very different from other picture books in that the girl in the book, Ella wants to tell the reader a story without bears in it. That bit is very important. She tells us what makes a good story (princesses, monsters) and then tells the reader a story. The illustrations are really lovely. It's also a good book for talking to children about what they think makes for a good story.

This book is about a little girl who wants to write a book with no bears. So you are reading about the little girl telling her story and what she considers to be a good book. My boy enjoyed it lots as the bear is integral to her story and she thought there was no bears. He liked pointing out all the pictures of the bear and what he was up to. A sweet book with good illustrations.
