Susan B. Anthony, one of the great political crusagers of the 19th century, beleived in the right of all people--black and white, male and female--to govern their own lives. In a nation that enslaved its blacks and allowed its women no voice in political or economic affairs, she worked tirelessly to right social wrongs.In 1920--14 years after Anthony's death--woman suffrage became a reality with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the Constitution. Although she had not lived to see it, that victory was largely Anthony's. Her astonishing energy, unflagging dedication, and limitless courage had finally made America's women full citizens of their own country.
