It is mid-winter and Britain is under thick snow. On his thirteenth birthday Alex wakes up to find that his godfather, Uncle Max, a mysterious archaeologist, has sent him a magnificent sword and a cryptic note. But Alex's parents have vanished overnight and he is all alone in a suddenly hostile world. Who is the mysterious man in black Alex keeps seeing and what does he want? Alex must first find Uncle Max with the help of his best friend Callie and then try to find and save his parents. Along the way he will travel further than he ever imagined to a land he's only ever dreamed of, on the way to discovering his true destiny as the Midwinter Child.
