The current edition of this publication includes 16 chapters and 10 appendices. It has been revised by 42 scientists from seven Institutes, State Agricultural Universities, and two organizations. The inclusion of various vegetables, fruits, tubers, and ornamentals in the village market indicates progress in the science and art of horticulture. The growing interest among educated youth in taking up horticulture as a profession is also indicative of this progress. The basic sciences, including physiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and biotechnology, as well as bioinformatics and economics, have contributed to a better understanding of horticultural crops. The third edition includes five chapters on floriculture and landscaping, updated information on newly released varieties of all horticulture crops, color photographs, and current data and references.
