Reader Q&A with Catherine Doyle

Author of the Storm Keeper Trilogy, Catherine Doyle

Catherine Doyle is the author of the award-winning Storm Keeper Trilogy - a gripping and enchanting series for readers 9+.

The books tell the story of Fionn Boyle, a young boy on the magical Arranmore Island. Once in a generation, the Island chooses a new Storm Keeper to wield its power and keep its magic safe from enemies. When the time comes for Fionn’s grandfather, a secretive and eccentric old man, to step down, Fionn finds himself tangled up in a battle that threatens to rekindle an ancient war.

Book 3 in the series, The Storm Keepers' Battle, continues Fion's adventures with his struggle to defeat the dark sorceress, Morrigan. It concludes the series and is out now.

Toppsta readers loved the book, saying:

"As much as I wanted to whizz through the book to know what happens, in a way I really didn’t want it to end! The story transports you into to a world of magic and adventure and this series is the best I have read for a while." TMatt79, aged 11

"this is action packed full of magic and determination this is definitely a must read! A new favourite." TigerT, aged 11

"I loved the book and I would give it five stars... My mum cried a few times at sad bits but she thought it was a great book too. " EStan, aged 8

Reader Q&A with Catherine Doyle
Tyler, aged 11

1) Will you ever write any more books set on Arranmore?
Arranmore has been the most fun place to write about but I think if I ever did return to it, it wouldn’t be for a few years. I am going to give Fionn and his friends some breathing space for now. I think they've earned a little break.

2) What was your favourite book of the trilogy to write?
I loved writing The Storm Keepers’ Battle because it was so epic and exciting at every turn, and I finally got to introduce Aonbharr, the magical flying horse!

3) Would you ever consider writing a book set in the time of Dagda?
I prefer books that are set in the modern world - but never say never!

4) What was your favourite book when you were in school?
I loved Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by CS Lewis.

5) If you could be any character from the Storm Keepers Battle, who would you be?
I think I’d be Shelby or Tara, although poor Shelby has a bit of a scary time in this book. I’d love to be the Tide Summoner though!

6) How old were you when you wrote your first book?
I was around 22 years old.

7) If you had the opportunity to meet a celebrity, who would you choose and why?
Beyoncé! I love her songs and she's an incredible performer. She feels a bit like a real-life Queen to me, so I'd probably accidentally curtsy to her.

8) Would you ever make anyone you know a character in one of your books?
Yes, I like to do this at least once in every book I write. For example, Fionn’s grandfather Malachy was inspired by my grandfather Charles Boyle, who was a brave sea captain with a wicked sense of humour and a deep sense of wisdom. I think it makes your book feel more real when you can take little bits and pieces (or people) from your life and use them as inspiration.

9) If you could choose any one of Dagda’s gifts, which one would you choose and why?
I think I’d like to have the Flying Horse, or perhaps the Wishing Cave, but only if I could make at least three wishes!

10) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Right now - I’d like to live somewhere sunny and beautiful. Maybe New Zealand, or Hawaii!
