The Magic Finger
Author: Roald Dahl Illustrator: Quentin Blake
One of Dahl's lesser known shorter books it is, however, a good one. My five year old twin girls really loved it and found it hilarious. About as subtle as a sledgehammer, this parable of the dangers of greed and killing animals for fun is great fun. As always Blake's illustrations are a wonderful accompaniment.

Fantastic Mr Fox
Author: Roald Dahl Illustrator: Quentin Blake
An absolute cracker of a book and worth reading in one sitting as so very exciting. Another of Dahl's fabulous parables of the dangers of greed and mean spiritedness, Bunce, Boggis and Bean are truly horrible creations. Meanwhile Mr Fox and his animal friends are clever, compassionate fellows who my five year old twin girls were rooting for from the start. Quentin Blake's illustrations are, as always, a wonderful accompaniment to a first class story.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Author: Roald Dahl Illustrator: Quentin Blake
Being a bit of a book snob (ie I always prefer the book to the film in general) I wanted to read this to my five year old twin girls before they watched the film. I am pleased to say that they absolutely adored it. They ran around the room cheering when Charlie gets a golden ticket and asked so many questions my head was spinning (the sign of an engaging book). A classic story and underneath all the wonder and humour a really heartwarming tale of the perils of gluttony and greed. Might not be suitable for young children as is a little scary in parts.

The Twits (Colour Edition)
Author: Roald Dahl Illustrator: Quentin Blake
This was my favourite Roald Dahl book as a child so I thought it would be a good starting point to introduce my five year old twin girls to the marvellous world of Roald Dahl. They loved it mainly because it is incredibly funny, super disgusting and has a brilliant ending. I was so glad (and relieved) that they love it as much as I did as a child. Be warned though that it isn't for the faint hearted and the Twits themselves are truly horrendous people full of bile and hate but that only makes the ending more rewarding. A thoroughly yucky, hilarious treat for kids who like gross things.

Read the Book, Lemmings!
Author: Ame Dyckman Illustrator: Zachariah OHora
This book is a hoot and the illustrations are so cute. I read this to my five year old twin girls and they really engaged with the story and fell in love with the lemmings. A really sweet, funny book that I recommend.
