A joy to read to my eight year old son at bedtime. I have loved it as much as he has enjoyed listening to it. He said it was 'excellent' because of all the 'magic and magical creatures that are in it'. We both adored the  'cute'  little sprite Squeezjoos, who Xar has to save in order to redeem himself. My son loved to hate the 'Kingwitch', the evil entity who really only appears in the final chapters. Interestingly, my son said 'it is more like the Narnia books than the Dragon/Toothless books, because of all the magic, witches and magical creatures. Witches are evil in both.' All in all a superb story which is both exciting and imaginative. Looking forward to the next one in the series later on in the year. (Already on order from Amazon.)

As a huge fan of the 'How to train your dragon' series, my son was utterly delighted when he received this book for his birthday (especially as his version was a special first edition with extra bits and signed by Cressida Cowell herself!).  Purely as an object, this is a beautiful book and full of the magical drawings and illustrations that you would expect from the author.

The book was read partly by my son to himself, and partly together.  As an adult, the bits I read were utterly charming, magical and enthralling, something that my son agrees with, as he would then continue reading by himself after I had finished his bedtime tales.

The story centres on two main characters, Xar (a wizard boy) and Wish (a warrior girl), and follows what happens when their paths cross.  The story is very magical, and explores the theme of what happens when you get what you wish for... What if what you wish for results in things you had not quite expected?  What if you are mischievous, and curious, and find it hard to do what you are told to? What are the consequences? What happens when you make a mistake? Can you fix it?

The ending implies that this may well be the start of a new epic series, and if that is the case, my son will definitely want to read them all!

The wizards of once was really really interesting, fun, epic and amazing.  It has some really funny parts that had us (me and mum) in hysterics.  We couldn't put the book down as we were desperate to know what would happen.

I absolutely love the sketchy pictures, especially the maps and the snow cats.

I would recommend this book to boys and girls aged 7 and upwards

Living deep in the wild woods, Xar is a wizard who has no magic.
Up in the iron warrior fort lives Wish, a warrior who likes magic.

On night, they crash land into each other's adventure and before they knew it were going on a quest together to protect the world from witches. Journeying all over the kingdom, can they protect everyone before it's too late? And is there something mysterious going on with warrior queen, Queen Sychorax...

A book full of wit, humor and adventure definitely recommended to readers aged 8+ because of the fantastic sketches, easy-to-follow storyline and funny bits in abundance!

Super funny. A grand adventure, one that's definitely going on my library shelves! I believe the book is beautifully illustrated, but I  had the audio book read by none other than DAVID FLIPPING TENNANT. Great gods, that man is good at voices. Run, do not walk, to listen to this one. Will be loved by children who've grown up with How To Train Your Dragon and are ready for something a bit more in-depth but retaining that humour. Confident readers from 7+ and sure to be loved from Y4 upwards.
