Jack and his dad are runaways. Jack's father recently turned whistleblower, revealing the truth about the illicit dealings of some powerful people. Realising that he and Jack might be in danger, Dad drives them to a remote shooting lodge in the Scottish Highlands, where they intend to lay low. In the cornfield beside the lodge stands a scarecrow. When Jack witnesses something incredible, he begins to realise that it is no ordinary scarecrow - it is alive, hungry and fuelled by rage. And when Dad's enemies begin to converge on the lodge, the scarecrow might just turn out to be Jack's best hope of survival.

Working in the city Jack’s dad uncovers important information about unprofessional (illegal) conduct involving powerful people within his company.  Feeling vulnerable and in danger they leave home to hide out in a hunting lodge in the Highlands until things are sorted.
If this danger wasn’t bad enough Jack thinks he is hallucinating when he sees the scarecrow in the cornfield outside the lodge eat a bird.  It couldn’t though, could it?

Pacey and nicely written, a good thriller, darkly comical too in the way that Skulduggery Pleasant is!

Straight into the story, Jack had to leave on a trip with his dad. He knew his Dad was not behaving as normal and was concerned he couldn't take his phone. Even worse when Jack saw where he was staying, in the middle of no where. I wanted to read more as Jack thought he saw a Scarcrow move. The story follows unusual friendships, discovery of new interests, danger and a little bit of magic. I really enjoyed this fast paced book!

The Scarecrow is a phenomenal book. It is full of suspense and has interesting characters. I especially like the character of Philbert the Scarecrow and my favourite quote about him is 'There was a sudden blur of movement as the scarecrow lifted a hand, grabbed the bird and pulled it towards its own face. There was a brief commotion of feathers, a splash of something bright red and the bird was gone.' It has a brilliant story line and one of my favourite parts is when Jack punches Philbert in the stomach. At times, I found it impossible to put down and read late into the night. I would recommend this book to people 11 and over as there are some quite gruesome bits.

I LOVED THIS BOOK!
From the very start the writing started building a spooky atmosphere and a sense of foreboding. The novel was creepy but not scary which I loved!
I also loved Philbert, the scarecrow and the family relationship in the book. It’s a great book but perhaps for older readers like me.

Definitely one for braver (and/or older) readers. Not a traditional horror but Scarecrow had some creepy and pretty gruesome parts. A lot more adventure than some other horror stories I have read. Philbert is not your typically obvious "horror story scarecrow" although he does seem that way at the start of the book. I found this book kept me entertained and it was short and exciting enough that I read it in just 2 days.

It took me a while to get into Scarecrow but when it got going I enjoyed reading it.  I like Jack and Philbert is a great character. The last third of this book is really action packed and fast paced, a little violence, some smashed up cars and a satisfying ending.

Not a bad story, just not a story I enjoyed. It was a little too horror book, I was expecting more adventure, as the story is based around Jack and his dad going on the run from some bad people.

The book is well written and I really liked the characters, the scarecrow is just a bit too scary for me!

Didn't realise this was a horror. Didn't like the witchy references or the talk of illness. Too dark for us really.
