Two bored gorillas decide to play a game of dares. Eating dares. Who will end up the big-bellied winner, and who the sore-bellied loser? This dry, funny picture book debut is pitch perfect for children who love outsmarting their friends.

I first read about Reece Wykes whilst searching online for unique books to read at bedtime. I was instantly attracted by Reece's illustrations on the front cover. They are very different to any other picture books we have read, they really are pleasing to look at. I then noticed that this debut picture book had been highly commended by the Macmillan Children's Book Prize and that Reece was joint winner for the Worldwide Illustration prize, UK category.

My little boy was very keen to read this story as he loves animals. An unusual tale of two gorillas trying to out smart each other, with jaw dropping consequences is bound to have your child gasping and laughing in equal measures as they turn each page. My son was absorbed in this book as he watched the gorillas eat more and more ridiculous things. He also found it really interesting trying to work out how each gorilla manages to complete each dare, including eating a rock, a tree and a bird before finally eating.....

I won't spoil the end by revealing what the final dare entailed for the daring gorillas. You will have to buy this captivating book to find out!!

What a beautiful book - the illustration is fantastic and the story is very funny. I would say this book is more for 5 years and under as the story is very short and easy to read.

Would definitely recommend!

This a funny and quirky book. 'I Dare You' follows two gorillas in the jungle who are bored. They decide to dare each other to eat things and it gets weirder and funnier as it goes along. This book made us laugh and the twist ending was odd and a little funny. There are a few words on each double page and some colourful illustrations. Great for anyone who likes gorillas and dares.

I read this to my 2 year old and she enjoyed turning the pages and the "funny gorillas".

We read it 3 times in a row as she enjoyed it so much.

The dark twist at the end was a shock to me (and maybe the streak of blood was too much) but it clearly went over my 2 year olds head!

This is a beautifully-illustrated book - the drawings are great. The story line is what happens when two bored gorillas decide to play a game of dare.  It starts off fun, but the ending is a bit 'interesting'. The words are simple so this is also good to read if your child is learning to read!

A nice large hardback book. Simple illsutrations of two gorillas. They are very silly and play dare games which they find funny until somebody gets eaten. This wasn't a book for Sophie but we're going to give it to her best friend Zack who enjoys this sence of homour more. It's a simple sentence per page. Easy for little ones to get.

We loved the front cover of this book, the illustrations are inviting and the embossed feel of the cover was nice, S couldn't stop stroking it. The story is pretty simple, with two bored apes daring each other to eat bigger and bigger things. My daughter laughed at the funny idea of them eating rocks and trees but didn't like the end when it appears the blue one has rated the orange ape. She's a pretty sensitive soul though!

I really wasn't sure about this story. Its all about daring each other to eat things. The bug I could get over and it was entertaining for them to be dared to eat a rock and a tree and I could see the comedy in that, but not a bird and then the ending where he eats his friend. Weird.
Luckily it went over my daughters head and she was fascinated with the big full belly after eating something so big and thought it was funny.

This book is beautifully illustrated but despite that didn't really appeal to me or my daughter. The basic premise is that two gorillas are bored so they dare each other to eat silly things. The concept behind it might have been funny but the gorillas are grumpy and difficult to warm to. Every book needs a likable character and there isn't one in this book. My daughter asked me why the gorillas were so sad. As a parent I don't think it's a great message for kids to do something very stupid (e.g. eat a rock) if they are bored. Overall, we won't be reading it again. I have given it two stars, rather than one, as the illustrations are high quality.

The illustrations are really nice.  There are not many words in the book but i feel the message is inappropriate for children of a young age.  Encouraging children to eat things is probably not advisable and the fact that the gorilla eats his friend and has blood around his mouth is not really suitable for a young child.

While, as an adult, I appreciate the humour in this book, my daughter wasn't upset by it as she couldn't understand why an animal would eat their friend. In a world where we are trying to teach our youngsters the importance of being nice to each other regardless of our differences, I think this in an inappropriate book for children of a young age.
There are few words but the illustrations are lovely.
I'm glad I read it to myself first and I won't be reading it to my 4 year old.
