I don't know how Walliams does it.  He has written about dementia, death, loss, corrupt leadership and care home abuse and turned those harsh subjects into an extrodinary, funny, exiting children's book.
Reading this book with my 8 year old not only did we laugh out loud we also sat quietly and discussed loosing a grandparent or someone we love.  As always Raj appears adding familiarity to the children and we love that the queen reappeared too.
We also love that Walliams books are always set close to London and know quite well the landmarks - in this case the War Museum - quite well.  Another fantastic book that will be loved by millions of children.

Covers some harrowing subjects dementia, abuse, death etc.. but in a way that children can understand.

I love the bond between grandson and granddad.

It was adapted for tv at xmas too which was good.

David Walliams is a brilliant actor, I hope he continues to write these amazing books.

I finished this just before Christmas which was great because the Tv Adaption was on TV over Christmas!

A really good book that I loved. I liked that it was set in a different time and I learnt about the Royal Air Force. My favourite character was the Grandpa because he was a hero.

This book is sad and really exciting! :( :P
Jack`s grandpa's old folks home closes(apparently because of a runaway bulldozer. So... Twilight Towers replaces it. After moving into a flat above Raj's shop and causing mayhem, the vicar suggested Twilight Towers to Jack's family. So Grandpa went to Twilight Towers. But with some research they manage to break Grandpa out. They manage to prove that Miss Swine(the Twilight Towers  owner) is evil and get him(yes it's a man) arrested!

This book is really realistic. It is about a boy called Jack and his Grandfather, and is set in 1983. Jacks Grandfather has a medical condition that makes him think he is still young. He was a spitfire pilot in WW2 and it causes some issues! Everybody he meets gets a special WW2 name depending on their skills. He also wants to go _up, up and away which can cause some fatal accidents. My favourite character is definitely Raj. Raj is in all the David Walliams books I have read and he is really funny. He runs a newsagent shop and the special offers in the shop are a good laugh, not ones youd want to buy. In Grandpas Great Escape Raj lives in the flat above Jacks Grandfather, so he is able to know if Grandpa is home or not and alert people to possible trouble. The book is well written and the illustrations by Tony Ross are funny they play an important role in the understanding of the story. I would recommend this book to everyone I know (I am 11). All my friends enjoy Mr Walliams books very much.

This book is fantastic. It was perfect for my boys, although it is not a 'boys book.'     Grandpa is a veteran WWII spitfire pilot who shares a special bond with his grandson Jack. The 2 spend hours playing together reliving Grandpa's great wartime adventures. When grandpa becomes more wandered and begins to live more and more in the past it is up to jack to help him to continue to be a great spitfire pilot and not just an oldie who has lost his marbles.    This book held the boys attention from start to finish. I have to say I found it hard to read the end of the book to them, I had a little tear! The story flows well and you are keen for just one more chapter! Thankfully the book is separated into 4 parts so we could put it down at times.    The story has lovely illustrations and the text is not all one size. Twilight Towers is written in spooky writing and all the bangs, crashes and whooshes look just as they should sound.    We would highly recommend this book for all age groups. We learned some history together through reading this as well as having a bit of a giggle too. Just sorry to have finished the story!

So happy to see Raj back after being missing from Awful Auntie. This book crated awareness of dementia and treatment of elderly citizens. It also demonstrates the love and bond between grandparents and grandchildren. A great story to read together and discuss. Once again Walliams is able to pull off delightfully funny and heartbreakingly sad in the same book. A must read for all youngsters. Though I will not lie, I read this myself as an adult and thoroughly enjoyed it.

This is a book my son has been waiting all year for, and he was not disappointed. We bought it as an Audio book, and it is so well read it was difficult to leave. The story is a great mixture of great story line, jokes laughs and a serious story. Its great to see the return of Raj, as he was much missed in the last book. This story has plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested and we fell in love with the characters of Jack and his Grandpa, "Wing Commander" as well as the amazingly described villains. We hope there will be another book next year from David and it would be great to see this story made into a tv, or theatre play.

This book is about a Grandpa who was in the RAF when he was younger but is now much older and a bit confused and thinks he is back in that time. He ends up in an old peoples home run by crooks and manages a daring escape and steals a Spitfire from the Imperial War Museum. His Grandson Jack loves him dearly and features a lot in the book.    I loved this book because it was full of adventure and you didn't know what would happen next. It made me laugh a lot too. It was a very thick book for me to read but I finished it so it must have been good.    I would recommend it to younger children from age 6 who might need some help to older children as both me and my 10 year old sister loved it. Thank you for letting me review it I am so glad I had the opportunity as its a book I would recommend over and over again

Our first David Walliams book! We really enjoyed reading it together. It's about a boy and his grandpa who doesn't want to stay in the residential home he has been sent to and manages to escape with the help of his grandson and embarks on a final adventure. It's a wonderful relationship to explore and it's a firm favourite here!
