Brian the Lion Goes into Space

Author:

A rhyming picture book about a lion called Brian who goes on a space adventure.

Brian the lion is tired of hanging out with his pride - all they do is sleep all day long. While they snooze, Brian gazes at the stars, dreaming of going into space. He can't believe it when his loved ones, tired of his moaning, present him with a DIY rocket so that he can fulfil his dream. Zoom - he's off! After looping the loop, Brian soon lands on a moon near Saturn and meets small green gnomes who make him rainbow-coloured food and speak in a strange language, and their dragon Norris. Though things are exciting for a while, Brian is soon missing home, even the boring bits. What will Brian do? Will he stay in his new space home or return to his pride? Featuring one of craft expert Tracey Radford's adorable animal creations, Brian the Lion Goes into Space is a sweet tale, with a wonderful moral message, that will be loved by young children.

We loved this book. A gentle, rhyming story of wanting adventure but realising you miss what you left behind. The pictures are photographs of model animals, trees, planets and other props that can be made easily with junk modelling. Half way through the book, I thought 'I could make one of these out of toilet roll' and indeed at the end of the story there are instructions on how to make your own Brian the Lion! My 2 year old was mesmerised by the pictures and was engaged by the rhyming prose. The author has also written 2 other books- Make your own Animals and Make your own Zoo, which look brilliant.

What a great book, with really fun arty illustrations. It’s really nice and different that all the illustrations in this book are hand made. The story is fun too, nice easy to follow rhyming text. Brian is bored and wants to go into space, so when he gets a d.i.y rocket. Off he goes, but once he’s there and the Gnomes speak a different language and eat strange food, Brian starts to miss home and his pride. My little boy really enjoyed this book and loved the illustrations, which we will be attempting to make ourselves too.

This is a very simple delightful little book.  Great pictures which clearly show home made rockets and lions, a lovely gentle rhyming story (great for bedtimes) and also great instructions on how to make Brian the Lion out of recycled products.  Sentiment of the grass is not always greener but it is always good to dream.  Loved this book and highly recommended.

This is such a charming book - and a reminder that the grass isn't always greener elsewhere! Brian the Lion dreams of space adventures as life on the plains is dull, dull, dull. When the pride buy him a build your own rocket kit he's off! We loved the illustrations - all models that you can make yourself with loo rolls/egg boxes etc - and the rhyming story scanned beautifully.
A fab addition to our bookshelf and a story that Lucas was interested in enough to happily read independently

Brian the Lion is bored with his life and longs to go into space. One day his friends help him on his mission to the stars and off he goes. He finds amazing creatures and food whilst on his magical journeys but something isn't quite right. Brian starts to realise that maybe his life isn't boring back home and he even starts to miss his friends. This is a wonderful book with a big dose of imagination. The story is fantastic and the rhyming text makes it easy and fun to read. We especially liked the blue gnomes and all had a guess at what they were really saying. We loved the illustrations which are really pictures of cardboard model animals and sets. The cardboard characters looked brilliant and it was great to find details of a book and website that could help you make your own versions. A great book with a lovely message.

This is a lovely book about a lion who dreams of adventure but realises home is where he wants to be. The pictures are of cardboard models which would be fun to make, when my little one is a bit older. The story has a nice rhyme to it and was fun to read to my daughter who enjoyed it.

Brian the lion is bored and longs to fly into space so his pride, bored with Brian the Lion and his intergalactic dreams, give him a rocket making kit. That should keep him busy ... and it does - he builds the ship, flies to a moon near Saturn, meets strange bearded gnomes in hats and even a dragon. But soon it dawns on Brian the lion that even the most adventurous king of the jungle can get homesick ...

Persephone loves this book - the rhyming narrative is easy to follow and the story simple yet beautifully imaginative. The book’s USP however are definitely the illustrations. All the ‘scenes’ are made out of household bits and pieces - toilet rolls, tissue paper and the odd bit of sticky bit plastic no doubt. And, best of all, there are instructions at the end, and a link to the author’s website, showing Persephone how to make her own Brian the lion. We haven’t tried this yet but it is definitely on the top of our list for the next rainy day activity!
