Boy Who Could Do What He Liked

Author:

Written especially for WBD 2016, this is a fabulously entertaining and touching novella from David Baddiel, author of the bestselling THE PARENT AGENCY and THE PERSON CONTROLLER. Illustrated by the hugely talented Jim Field, winner of the Roald Dahl Funny Prize. Alfie has a routine. To be honest he has a lot of routines. But then one day Alfie's babysitter is unavailable, and Alfie's parents get Mrs Stokes instead. Mrs Stokes doesn't do routines. Instead, she just tells Alfie to do what he likes. And that's when things start to go weird. Does everything get hilariously out of control? Yes. Does Alfie learns a valuable lesson? Nah. This isn't that kind of story...

A superb book! Great for reluctant readers as this is short, exciting and definitely out of the ordinary. Alfie breaks from routine when he gets a new baby sitter who isn't quite as she seems. A must read for all children... especially those with a great imagination. Hats off to Baddiel.

‘I was ecstatic to see David Baddiel had a book out for World Book Day because I love his books so much. It didn’t disappoint. The story was a bit out of the ordinary. I was really gripped as it was an exciting plot. The characters were very funny. This book is good for David Baddiel fans and also if you have never heard of him try this and it will make you want to read the rest.

‘This is a story about a boy who relied on rountines after his mum died. One night he had a new babysitter who changed everything. (With a bit of magic). This story is exciting and full of what a boy would imagine.’

Brilliant book, the author is really good I love all the crazy things which happen, like a glowing under water zimmer frame and a dolphin who can talk! It also has a really weird bit, where they are talking about "thinking outside of the box" and throwing the box away, You shouldn't throw the box away, just make it smaller than a sub atomic particle .

My son has tried to read David Baddiels book the parent Agency and found the story a little difficult to follow.
This book is much shorter and  is easier to follow so I think would be easier to keep his interest to the end. The story of Alfie and his family with their routines and time scales are relevant to my sons age. This story would be one that would teach him the lesson that a little flexibility in what you
do everyday is good. But also having some routine is needed too! there is an amount of humour especially in the babysitters character Mrs Stokes. You are left wondering was Alfies adventure real or just a dream.

The story was slow to start with but got better as it went along because it got more exciting. I enjoyed reading about Alfie, the main
character, learning what to do in different situations as to begin with he didn't have any idea how to spend his time when his routine wasn't in place. I liked the way he became so imaginative while he was playing. I was a bit disappointed that the story was
so short, I wanted to read more about Alfie!

Alfie normally follows routines, but this isn't the case when his normal babysitter is unavailable, so he ends up with Mrs Stokes who tells Alfie to do what he likes, so of course Alfie does. It was easy to read and follow. It is entertaining and kept my attention, and I liked reading about the fun things Alfie got up to with Mrs Stokes, the babysitter.
