Georgie and Leo love this book!
They love identifying the animals and then reading their descriptions. They love the rhyming lines and love to shout our 'SURPRISES' every time it appears!
They enjoy following the text on the pages as no two pages are presented in the same way.
Although the book is not overladen with text, there is varied vocabulary used which was fun for the children to learn.
The maze at the end was a fun way to finish.

This book was so interacted it make story time in to conversations about animals, brought up questions and make the book come alive. My four year old expressed her favourite animals and loved the surprises the book brought to her. The content and layout was really good and she loved especially the puzzle at the end and turning the pages to the next page. The feel and design of the book was lovely and say to read to her. Since reviewing this book we have purchased another one from the author as the story and pictures I felt were perfect for my daughters age and bedtime.

We absolutely loved this book. I read it with my son and he thought it was amazing. He loves finding out about different animals and this book was perfect for him. The illustrations are amazing. So vivid! The rhyming text made the book easy to read and the continuing 'Surprises' were great fun. There are fun things to discuss and do with your child including details to help find minibeasts and a maze to follow at the end of the book. This book is a great conversation starter about animals of all shapes and sizes. A fantastic book with a few words, fantastic illustrations and a lot to spark imaginations.

A fun book for toddlers to reinforce their knowledge of animals. We were really impressed with the realistic drawings of animals. Very fun to read with the rhyming and no two pages were the same in design. Fun maze at the end of the book kept my toddlers attention to the end.

This book features lots of animals, which I knew my daughter would enjoy as she loves animals. The illustrations were great and very detailed, and I really enjoyed the rhymes. It is a fun book, which showcases animals/minibeasts from worms to tigers. My daughter enjoyed telling ME what everything was, that she recognised, and she even learnt some new animals. She loved the added puzzle thrown in at the end.

We really enjoyed this book it's made up of rhyming words to describe animals such as small and tall and is a really good length without becoming too much for little ones as it's not really a story type book but a short rhyme spread over numerous pages.

Each page is littered with animals - with everything from lions to worms. Although the pictures aren't very bright with slightly more muted tones used they are quite realistic and very recognisable even to the smallest of children.

We had great fun looking at the book and once we had read it we went back through looking at all the animals and discussing them from what noise they made to where they live so I think this book is fantastic because although it's not intended as an educational book it has the promise to be one and my son has sat and looked at it many times alone just to see all the animals

This is a gorgeous book and a delight to share. The illustrations are amazingly detailed and just stunningly accurate. We adored the way in which the text surrounds the illustrations and the repeated 'surprises' in the story. It gave us such a lot to discuss together. There are additional information sheets about the animals if you search for the book on the internet, which are a bit more in depth and help to explain a bit more about the animals (we're taking our copy to the zoo so we can find some of the animals there!)

Animal Surprises is a stunning addition to children's non-fiction books. It is richly illustrated by Abbie Cameron whose use of colour and texture really helps to bring the animals alive on the page. The aim of Animal Surprises is to showcase the unusual and the unfamiliar as well as more well-known animals and this is summed up by the book's refrain, "Creatures of all shapes and sizes, some you'll know and some...  surprises!"
Nicola Davies's rhyming text is great fun to read aloud. Her language choices are really expressive and will help to expand your child's vocabulary. For example, animals are described as scaly, curly whirly and squat. Minibeasts squirm and squiggle. Bats have flapping, gliding, zooming wings. Davies has a degree in zoology and so her text contains specialist vocabulary too. I had to look up what was meant by dolphins' flukes.
The book has been produced to a very high standard by the publishers, Graffeg. The paper is of a lovely quality and the book is gloriously saturated with colour. I really like the variety in page layout too and the creative interplay between the text and the illustrations.
The book ends with a match the tail to the animal puzzle and there's an additional interactive element on the minibeast page too. Oh and if, like me, your knowledge of zoology is somewhat lacking, Graffeg have produced a very handy guide to all the animals in the book that you can download from their website. (I had envisaged frantic research on my part before sharing the book with my son!)
There are two more books in the series and we definitely want to read them too - they look just as brilliant.

My 5yr old really enjoyed this book especially as it tied in with what she has been learning about at school, it has all sorts of animals from mini beasts to creatures that live under the sea! Both enjoyed joining in with the 'surprises' pages and loved the added puzzle at the end. The quality of both the book itself and the illustrations are very detailed. Even in the hunt for the others in the same range

This is a reference book not a story book, and teaches children all about interesting animals. The illustrations are a little dark but are very accurate and my three year old twins recognised the animals they knew straight away. Unfortunately at the moment my two prefer a story book but I will keep this aside for when they want to learn more about animals. A great book for those whose children are fascinated by exotic and unfamiliar animals.
