A Monster Calls

Authors: ,

The bestselling novel and major film about love, loss and hope from the twice Carnegie Medal-winning Patrick Ness.Conor has the same dream every night, ever since his mother first fell ill, ever since she started the treatments that don't quite seem to be working. But tonight is different. Tonight, when he wakes, there's a visitor at his window. It's ancient, elemental, a force of nature. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor. It wants the truth. Patrick Ness takes the final idea of the late, award-winning writer Siobhan Dowd and weaves an extraordinary and heartbreaking tale of mischief, healing and above all, the courage it takes to survive.

This was a touching book all about love, loss and hope. I enjoyed every moment of it, and the slightly riddle-like stories especially, yet it probably would have been more appropriate for an older reader. It helps you understand what life is like for some children and how frustrating it can sometimes be when people don't understand.

The dream. The thing that haunts Conor every night, the thing which makes his life a misery. Go to school, be treated like a disease, get beaten up, go home, have the dream. He wishes his life were different, that his life were normal. That his Mum's treatment would work, she would get better, and they could be normal again. And then his life does change, when he starts to get visits from the monster. Ancient and mysterious, the yew tree has come walking, for he has been called. It wants Conor's deepest, darkest secret: the truth.

This is definitely recommended to children aged 11+ because it is a very deep read and may be a bit confusing for younger readers. A fabulous book; I cannot wait to see the film!
