If you've ever wondered what tadpoles are thinking about, then Tad might just be the book for you. It tells the story of a frog from the spawn on the inside of the front cover to frog inside the back cover. Along the way, you meet Gulp, the fish that all the tadpoles are scared of (and maybe was in their imagination anyway!). It's s great way to talk about life cycles with young children, has lots of humour and the illustrations are wonderful; a mix of murky pond and bright green frog! A must read for the summer!

A great story to illustrate the metamorphosis  of a tadpoles to a frog, and the dangers of life in a pond! Had is the smallest and watches her siblings grow and change, until they all start to disappear...
We loved the charming illustrations and the character of brave Tad. A wonderful book.

This is the third Benji Davies book I've shared with my Year 1 class, and he's quickly becoming one of our favourite authors. If you are a teacher or parent teaching about the life cycles of frogs - this is definitely the book you need.

The story follows Tad, a young female tadpole, and the smallest of her family (my class loved the words tadbrothers and tadsisters). She is slower developing than the rest of the tadpoles, and my group really responded to her frustration and impatience to be fully grown. Added into the mix is Big Blub, an enormous fish that eats tadpoles. All my class were rooting for Tad to escape, and to be safe - I loved how caught up in the chase and story they became.

Finally, the illustrations are just perfect, and not like any of the Benji Davies books we've looked at so far. The colours are a beautiful mix of blues, greens and yellows and they create the setting and atmosphere of different parts of the pond wonderfully. My class spent ages looking at them, they kept hunting for this book in the book corner.

Right - off to order Grandad's Secret Island next - I've heard it's a good one!
