'Adventures are unpredictable and often terribly badly behaved - a bit like pickled onions if you've ever tried to fork one on a plate - but they have a way of unlocking people and turning them upside down so that all the astonishing things fizzing around inside them start to tumble out...'

Eleven-year-old Casper Tock hates risks, is allergic to adventures and shudders at the thought of unpredictable events. So, it comes as a nasty shock to him when he accidentally stumbles into Rumblestar , an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts.

All Casper wants is to find a way home, but Rumblestar is in trouble. An evil harpy called Morg is sending her followers, the Midnights, into the kingdom to wreak havoc and pave the way for her to steal the Unmapped magic for herself. But Casper cannot turn a blind eye because the future of his own world, he discovers, is bound up with that of the Unmapped Kingdoms.

And so, together with Utterly Thankless , a girl who hates rules and is allergic to behaving, and her miniature dragon, Arlo , Casper embarks upon an adventure full of cloud giants, storm ogres and drizzle hags. Can he, Utterly and Arlo, the unlikeliest of heroes, save the Unmapped Kingdoms and our world from the clutches of Morg and her Midnights?

Live a life filled with adventure with Abi Elphinstone in this brand NEW series where a whole new world is waiting to be discovered...

I have been a huge fan of Abi Elphinstone since reading sky song, so i was excited to read this book and i wasn't dissapointed. It's set a few years after her previous book Everdark. I have read Everdark but i don't think you'd have to before reading this book as this book follows different characters, namely a boy from England called Casper and a girl from Rumblestar in the Unmapped Kingdom called Utterly. There's also a dragon called Arlo. It's an absolutely brilliant adventure story. Casper is a shy and bullied child at school and Utterly is very sad and angry. They work together to save their homes and in that journey they meet a host of mythical characters and visit lots of amazing mythical places. They also become friends, which is the best bit! I will be telling all my friends about this book! It's super!

Casper Tock is a bullied, timid boy who lives his life through lists, schedules and order. When trying to avoid and hide from the school bullies, he unexpectedly and unbelievably emerges in an unknown, magical kingdom and his ordered, carefully controlled existence is turned upside down. Meeting the young, fierce and prickly Utterly Thankless sets off a new destiny for Casper. One in which he must embrace the danger of the unknown, take risks both physical and emotional and allow himself to trust and rely on other people.
The most amazing world is created within the pages of Rumblestar. It's full of beautiful, detailed imagery and a whole host of marvellous, magical creatures. There are cloud giants, grotesque drizzle hags, wise snow trolls, malevolent griffins to be befriended ,outwitted or battled. Casper and Utterly (and the most charming, heart stealing miniature dragon Arlo) must face their fears and weaknesses to fulfill their quest and stop evil harpy Morg from controlling Rumblestar and threatening all the kingdoms and Casper's world itself.
It's the most glorious read and you become utterly immersed in this vividly created world. The blossoming friendship that slowly begins to grow between Casper and Utterly is so gently and emotionally written and really does pull at the heart strings at times as we see their characters unfold.A story of being brave and selfless despite your fears and of the power of friendship to lead you through dark times.Stunning read and I loved every minute of it!

This is Elphinstone in her element... so mesmerising, it turns its own pages. There are stories you’ll remember & then there is Rumblestar; one you’ll never forget. A remarkable return from a writer who I’m in constant awe of. One of the children’s books of the decade.

Wow love this. This book is about 11 year old casper tock who doesn't like adventure but accidentally stumbles on Rumblestar which is an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts. Casper ends up on a adventure to help this kingdom. I won't say any more as you need to read it for yourself as I couldn't put this book down once I started it.

Casper Tock has no friends. He would rather spend his time making to do lists and dodging the bullies at his school. One day he finds a grandfather clock in his house and decided to go inside it. He was not expecting to find a girl from the Unmapped Kingdoms  called Utterly to be in it with her tiny dragon pet Arlo. When he enters Rumblestar, he realises that there is trouble. And it is up to Casper, Utterly and Argo to save it from the evil harpy Morg...

I loved this book.

The relationship between Casper and Utterly was compelling.  The setting is captivating.  The names are fab (Slumbergrot), the language atmospheric “They looked out over a lake surrounded by meadows which held the reflection of twilit clouds, then, as dusk came and night rolled in, the lake turned silver under the moonlight.”

Before you read this book you need to read Everdark, the first book in the series. I would recommend this series to fans of fantasy/adventure stories and readers of Catherine Doyle, Katherine Rundell, Vashti Hardy and Sophie Anderson.  I can’t wait for ‘Jungle drop’!! Great for age 10+

I absolutely relished the deliciously rich, breath-taking world of Rumblestar which invites the reader to savour its many wonders, including the landscape of floating clouds, spectacular castle and magical creatures.
Casper Tock is living in Faraway (our World), which is being devastated by very unusual weather conditions. He is trying to escape from school bullies when he inadvertently unlocks the way to Rumblestar, one of the Unmapped Kingdoms, which is being threatened by an old enemy.
There he meets the irrepressible, and brilliantly named, Utterly Thankless who promptly arrests him … and shortly after rescues him. And so begins their incredible adventure into The Beyond where they meet magical creatures including the delightfully creepy drizzle hags and the kind-hearted, new-age snow trolls.
Their daring mission to attempt to save both their worlds is full of fast-paced action, tension which ebbs and flows with magical ease interspersed with humour and the realisation of a deep friendship.
I adored both Casper and Utterly, and her delightfully sensitive, brave and clever, dragon, Arlo. Casper hates taking risks and loves nothing better than lists, routines and regimented organisation. Utterly is a quick-witted rule-breaker with a penchant for recklessness. And yet, each is just what the other needs. Together, they build a heart-warming friendship forged in adventure, honesty, loyalty and courage – and brilliant one-liners!
This is a real marvel of a story: an enchanting read, brimming with adventure, nuggets of wisdom and a testament to the power of friendship. I am excited to share Rumblestar with my class who I know will adore Casper, Utterly and Arlo as much as I did.
I got this as an e-book ARC from Netgalley but this does not affect my review.

If I could give this more than 5 stars, I absolutely would! This is just incredible. There are some roaring adventures, friendships and magic in here. Reading this book brought me such joy. Some incredibly powerful messages about friendship and sadness in here. Loved the links to Everdark too! I can’t wait to see what comes next! Abi Elphinstone is fast becoming our modern-day CS Lewis. This book is such a treat - brimming with magic and adventure, it sweeps you up from the very first page and takes you on the most wonderful adventure.

This book was an excellent read. I was sucked into the story straight away, and I couldn't put the book down.
It is an interesting plot, in which Casper Tock (an 11 year old boy) gets whisked away by a magic grandfather clock. Casper's usual life follows routine and involves tick charts, timetables and never being late. His life now is very different. He is being partnered up with a girl, who seems to think he is a criminal and a miniature dragon. Together they have to save the world....
This is a story where two seemingly opposite personalities realise they can get on and become friends.

This is honestly my "Book of the Year" so far and I can't wait to put it into the hands of our many Abi Elphinstone fans in the school library! Her ability to conjure imaginative worlds, populated by incredible, but simultaneously believable, characters knows no bounds. Here we have Casper Tock, a timid, bullied boy who gets through life relying on timetables and "to do" lists, teaming up with wild girl Utterly Thankless to attempt to save the Unmapped Kingdom of Rumblestar from Morg's army of Midnights. The story follows on seamlessly from this year's World Book Day title, Everdark. I don't want to ruin the complex and intriguing plot for anyone, so all I will say is that it is utterly brilliant, covers a range of themes from friendship to appreciation of nature's beauty, and everyone over 10 should read this book.

This book is about 11 year old boy called Casper Tock who doesn't like adventures but he accidentally stumbles upon an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts called Rumblestar. The prologue is quite long but once the story starts, the book really begins to flourish with it's unlikely hero of the kingdom.

This is my first Abi Elphinstone book. I liked it but thought the start was quite long and slow. It is about an 11 year old boy called Casper who thinks he is allergic to adventures and shudders at the thought of risky events. But he accidentally stumbles into an Unmapped Kingdom full of magical beasts called Rumblestar. He just wants to go home but the Kingdom is in trouble and so is Earth if he doesn't help.
