A brilliantly funny book that has many jokes, some that you only spot when you've read it again & again.  I was lucky enough to get it in a Toppsta Giveaway & received it in time for half-term; I couldn't put it down!
When Senator Lactus Bifidus announces a four-stage chariot race from Modicia to Naples, Asterix & Obelix can't wait to enter.  Julius Caesar, the Roman Emperor, tells Bifidus that a Roman must win, or else!  The Senator decides to use some dirty techniques...
Full of laughs, I think this book is great for 9 to 13 year olds who enjoy comics & enjoy stories set in historical times.

My boys loved this book,  the comic book style illustrations and layout really appealed to them and made this fast paced story even more compelling.
The small text is in speech bubbles mostly and as such is better for more confidant readers but you could follow the story by using the illustrations alone as they are very detailed.
The story follows Asterix and Obelix taking part in a chariot race across Italy aiming to win the Tranitalic cup.
Think we will be looking for more of the books in this series.

Mummy and Daddy said they used to read Asterix books when they were my age and I was excited to read this one. I was surprised to see it is a comic book and this means it's easier to read. I've not read a comic book before but this was fun! Asterix has a chariot race and I liked this because we have done chariot races at school for our Roman topic so I knew what the book was about. Asterisk has a friend called Obelix in the book and they are funny together. The whole book is very funny and made me laugh.  The best bit was that the book is a comic as the pictures helped me to understand what was happening in the story, especially as I like drawing too because I could try to draw some of the characters for myself.  It was fun to read. I want to read more comic books now. I think boys and girls aged 7+ would love it! This book was awesome!

Both children are really enjoying reading this book. Neither have sat and read it cover to cover but both have dipped into it again and again. It's a classic, and it's very funny. They have asked me to get more of the series.

A real blast from the past! I enjoyed reading the Asterix books when I was growing up and was interested to see what my 10 year old would think. He read the book quite quickly, maybe a little too quickly as he wasn't able to recall much of the story afterwards! He loved the illustrations but skipped some of the longer complicated words. He said he would be interested in reading more in the series but mainly to look at the illustrations rather than to engage with the text. For me this is the beauty of the Asterix books. They can be appreciated by a wide age-range from young children who will enjoy the comic book style through to older children who will appreciate the humour and some of the historical context. This is one that will stay on the shelf to be read again in a few years' time and hopefully appreciated in a whole new light!
