From master storyteller MICHAEL MORPURGO, and illustrated in stunning colour by the award-winning EMMA CHICHESTER CLARK, comes a surprising, charming and uplifting twist on The Wizard of Oz, told by a very special and unforgettable character: Dorothy's pet dog, Toto. A perfect, collectible gift for all children (and children at heart).
"I was there," Papa Toto said, and those magic words sent shivers down my spine. It was going to be the Wizard story. "Dorothy and me were both there."
We were all silent, snuggled up together, waiting, waiting.
Then Papa Toto began...
When a twister descends on their Kansas farm, Toto and his owner Dorothy hide in the house - only to be plucked into the air and whisked away!
Coming down with a crash in the mysterious land of Oz, the pair meet a series of extraordinary characters: a scarecrow who believes he has no brains, a tin man without a heart, and a cowardly lion who may not be as cowardly as he thinks he is.
But Toto and Dorothy are desperate to return home - after all, home is home, and home is best! So they set off with their new friends on a journey down the yellow brick road to find the only person who might be able to help them: the Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
But what they find might surprise them. And on the way, all of them will learn that what they think they are missing might have been there, all along...
Beautifully illustrated throughout, this is an unforgettable telling of a classic story, and a must for every bookshelf.

Toto is a pleasant , gently paced book for young and old .

Toto is just being a dog . a normal , yet noble little hound who often puzzles over his humans antics , but is fed and watered , so bumbles along anyway . That is , until , the winds pick up , the cyclone roars , and him and Dorothy are whisked away to a place far , far from home . Following the yellow brick road , Toto and Dorothy embark on a determined journey to the so-called terrifying wizard of Oz with just one request : they want to go home . The adorable duo meet plenty of characters on the way , the terrifying and the harmless , the evil and the well meaning , the strong and the less so and will gain companions to . But as Toto , Dorothy and the gang march onwards , they discover that , sometimes , you have what you need inside you it just needs to be let out......

Toto is the classic story of the wizard of Oz told from the point of view of Dorothy's loyal companion . The first few pages introduce you to Toto , and little Toto , one of his many puppies . Toto tells the story , and his inputs at the beginning of the chapter and the occasional one in between are shown italics , often humorous , that make you wonder what it could of looked like from his point of view . it is beautifully illustrated in full color that sparks the imagination . a good one to read with little ones , it takes the edge of the scarier bits . as an older reader , I would gave preferred it to be a bit longer , yet I can appreciate that it might not be aimed at 12 year olds such as myself . to end on a positive , as this book deserves , it was a whiusmical read from sir Michael morpugho .

Oh my goodness! This book just arrived this morning and it is ADORABLE! it is a longer, chapter book with really lovely illustrations. My daughter is 6yo, and an excellent reader. She could probably make a good attempt at reading this herself, but I intended to use it as a book to read to her every day. Chapters are either sort, or well punctuated, so it lends itself perfectly to reading short segments at a time. The prologue is in the voice of one of "papa Toto's" pups, ave the rest of the story is the Wizard of oz, from Toto'a perspective. My animal mad little person will adore it!

My son read this book.  He is 13.   He loved the fact that it was written from the dog's perspective, very original.  Probably more a pre-teen book but still enjoyable and easy to read.  Nicely illustrated.

I loved this book! This book is the wizard of oz, but from toto's point of view.
In this book, Dorothy and Toto are swept away by a tornado. They land in magical land of oz. On the way to the wizard, they meet new friends, but an evil witch is out to get them!
This book has amazing and colourful illustrations and you have to read it!

Wow! What a lovely book. Genuinely.

There's always the worry with a retelling of a well known story that it just wont live up to expectations, it's a story that's so done and redone and so ingrained in popular culture that it could sink like a stone but this, THIS book is different. This book tells the story from Toto's point of view- actually this book tells the story as told by Toto's son 'Tiny Toto' who is recalling the story told by Toto. It is genuinely a unique way to tell the story and it really works!

The story is entertaining and heartfelt in places, familiar but also new. It was a delight to read and i read it all in one sitting!

The ending had me in tears because it was so sweet and i could relate to Tiny Toto listening to his Papa regale about his adventures.

The illustrations are beautiful and compliment the story well.

A lovely retelling of a classic story. The children loved spotting the links between the version of the Wizard of Oz they already knew. Some sections felt a little long, and some of the parts where Old Toto’s thoughts are brought in whilst he is telling the story didn’t flow especially well, but overall a lovely book to share. Emma Chichester Clark’s illustrations are beautiful and the children couldn’t wait for the next picture!
