This book is amazing. It is packed full of information and has some amazing drawings and pictures. DK books never disappoint especially when it comes to their non-fiction books. They are always jam packed with useful details. There are lots of different sections covering lots of different topics from deciduous forests, coniferous forests and their plants and animals to the wonders of rain forest plants and animals. The book is great for young readers and they can learn a lot. One page has illustrations showing six different types of trees as well as their names to help the reader identify them in a forest. There are pictures of rain forests all around the world. There are also fun things to do and make such as bark rubbing and how to make your own cone animal. We loved reading this book and are ready to go to our local woodland and identify as much as we can.

This book is filled to the brim with interesting facts that we enjoyed reading together. There are activities throughout the book that are simple enough for children to do themselves. The cover isn't very appealing to the eye although throughout the book there are many beautiful pictures.

Only received this 2 days ago but already been bark rubbing with all the children. An interesting book that makes a change from the usual fiction we read. Full of interesting facts that gets the mind racing and eager to get out in the fresh air. Lovely book.

I looked at this book with my 2 children (3 and 7yrs). My eldest read it on his own as well. We have taken it out with us on a few occassions (to our local country park and conservation area) to see if we could spot things out of the book, such as plants and animals. There were bits that lost my youngest's attention such as how a forest is formed, but my eldest like those bits, as he enjoys information and learning about new things. We did the leaf rubbing from the book and talked about things in the book that we had ever seen when out and about.

My six year old really enjoyed this book, she liked the range of what was included in the book and how it was broken up into sections. As a mother, I felt she looked more at the pictures rather than taking the time to read and learn from the vast amount of information inside, but she is adamant this book is worthy of five stars and not my recommended four!

This is a typical DK high-quality children's book. Nicely bound (hardback) with a very attractive cover.
It covers and compares forests all over the world. I would say the book is mainly Fun facts, with interesting questions to think about posed and the odd activity here and there e.g. Make a nutshell boat, making paper. That being said, it is a fascinating non-fiction book that you can read cover to cover or just dip into here and there.

A super little hardback book filled with all manner of facts about forests.  Broadly split into coniferous, deciduous and rainforest it explores the kind of trees and wildlife in each.  It also looks at how forests are formed, why they are essential and some of the things we can do to maintain/save our woodlands.  There are a few ideas of things to do dotted amongst the facts (I definitely fancy trying to make paper) and I perhaps might have preferred it to have a few more activities to make it a touch more interactive.  That said it's small enough to take on our next walk in the woods and will help us identify some of the trees and get us looking at the next fallen log a bit more carefully!

An excellent non fiction hardback book from Dorling Kindersley. Just really what you would expect from them. It is very informative in relation to woodlands and forests, both in terms of what you would expect to find in UK and further afield. It gives an overall look at what a forest/woodland is, to how we might preserve them for future generations. It explains about the different types of forests (deciduous, evergreeen) and the changing seasons, as well as looking at the type of wildlife you can hope to see there. The language is relatively accessible for a primary school aged child. My son found it interesting and is looking forward to doing some bark/leaf rubbings and creating some cone animals next time we go for a walk in our nearby woodlands.

This book is beautiful to look at and crammed full of brilliant facts on types of trees and plants and what to look for when you're out in a forest. However my 5 and 8 yr old were reluctant to read this independently. I think it could have benefitted from more activities and maybe more illustrations that are aimed at the age category this book is designed for.

This is a lovely book for young readers, full of interesting facts and lovely pictures. It tells you a great deal of what you might want to know about woodlands and forests,  deciduous and broadleaf trees.

Although it is described as facts and activities I think it's fair to say that it's mainly facts with few activities, much fewer activities than I expected hence 4* instead of 5. Also I had assumed this book would be about the UK but it seems to be multi national,  featuring rain forests and elks/moose for example.  If you're expecting it to be like an i-spy book you might be disappointed. It's not that kind of book at all, unless you're planning on a spot of globe trotting.   However as a fact book about (mainly) trees it is very useful. I would have liked to have seen a bit more about nature and habitats, woodland flowers and so on. It is a lovely book though nonetheless. It's one to dip in and out of and keep coming back to, and I'm sure we will.
