This book is great, so much to see on every page. The lift the flaps make it even better and it's packed with facts. The story is great too. The baby mammoth has escaped and they have to find him and get him back before the magic hour is up. In the magic museum. My little boy loves this book, it's going to become a favourite.

I wasn't sure what this book would be like, and at first it looks like a standard story book.  Yet it's not! It's full of wonderful flaps to lift, with plenty of great museum facts and beautiful illustrations. The story is about Oscar who finds a woolly mammoth and his brother, and has to get them back to their mother at the museum.  Each page is very cleverly drawn, with key natural history facts underneath. My 4 year old son loved aquarium part - especially the turtle, and my 8 year old daughter liked the flight floor where she learnt all about Bessie Coleman.
I thought this was a very clever book. Just the right amount of story to facts ratio, and the lift the flaps make it irresistible for little ones to read!
I'd highly recommend this book for both boys and girls from 4-9 years old.

This book has been read so many times since we got it! Straight away my daughter was drawn to with the beautiful illustrations, full of detail and the lift the flaps which are a lovely edition.
The story follows a little boy who is woken in the middle of the night by a commotion going on outside, he discovers a Wooly Mammoth searching for it's baby brother who has gone off causing mischief during the museums magic hour when everything comes to life.  As they hunt for little Teddy they go through all the different rooms in the Natural History room.  Each room is full of facts from aviation, art history to extinct animals.
The characters are fun and lovable instantly, from the little boy to the Wooly Mammoths, and all the extra animals, statues and paintings that come to life.
The facts are presented in such a fun way.  We really liked the mix of fictional story with the facts.
A truly lovely book.

This book was even better than we were expecting. Teddy the little mammoth is running away from his big brother during magic hour in the museum, and a boy called Oscar comes to help. There are lots of flaps to lift (my son loves lift the flap books so great to see an age appropriate one), excellent details in the stunning illustrations and loads of facts about all sorts of things to be found in the museum. My son is currently obsessed with lifts and was very excited that one was featured, complete with a lift fact. Wonderful!

We loved The Curious Case of The Missing Mammoth, its packed full of excellent illustrations with lots to look at on every page. Its so good to find a flap book that isn't babyish as my 4 year old loves flaps but is growing out of most of them. There are so many facts and figures on this book it can be read over and over again without getting bored. The story is fun too!
All in all a great book and a big thumbs up from my son.

5 stars
'I like the book because it has got lots of flaps, and I like flap books. There's lots of facts about the museum creatures behind the flaps. I learnt lots. The story is very, very, very good.' said Lilibet, age 4. And she decided on the star rating.

Some of the facts were a bit tricky to explain to a 4 year old and they interfered with the story somewhat, but think it is a book to come back to a number of times and use to prompt conversations about whatever appeals to the child on that reading . Fun, unusual concept and will encourage museum visits and learning. Plus can be treated as straightforward, sweet story about a naughty little woolly mammoth running through the museum, if prefered.

Teddy the little mammoth has run away during magic hour at the museum and his big brother must capture him before he does too much damage! Oscar a young boy promises to help the older mammoth - and so gets to explore the museum for the first time - through the different departments uncovering different facts as they pass the various departments and exhibits of the museum.

Its hard to place the book in a category - its a non-fiction / discovery type book pulled together with an over-riding fictional chase story. It's a difficult balance - linger too long on the facts (hidden amongst lots of flaps) and you've lost the momentum in the story... that being said the "story" is quite limited and really just a device to pull you through the museum and would in isolation not be that compelling.

The illustrations are very detailed and colourful supporting a nice balance of facts - that would allow a read to dip in and out of the book. That being said I think its more suited to a slightly older child - an old age 4 / an age 5 - in support of those first visits to a more formal museum or art gallery. I also think its a daytime book - we tend to read in dimmed light just before bed, and i found the text quite dark (on a dark background) quite hard to read in "half-light".

I've found my soon-to-be-4 yr old... flipping through pages and opening flaps... yet when i've asked her does she want me to read to her... she'll put it down and get other books. I think the interest / potential of the book is there.... its just too soon. Hence the 4 stars.
