When a crime needs solving, there's only one dog for the job! Join Nell the Detective and help solve the mystery of the missing books. There once was a dog with a keen sense of smell.
She was known far and wide as Detective Dog Nell. Peter's dog Nell has an amazing sense of smell. Her ever-sniffing nose is always hard at work solving mysteries and finding all Peter's lost toys. But Nell has other talents too . . . When she's not cracking cases, Nell goes to school with Peter and listens to the children read. Books about dinosaurs, books about space and even books about dogs - Nell loves them all! But one day Peter and Nell arrive at school to find all the books have disappeared! Who could have taken them, and why? Luckily, Detective Dog Nell, with help from the whole class, is ready to sniff out the thief! Written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by the multi-talented illustrator and print-maker Sara Ogilvie, The Detective Dog is a fast-paced celebration of books, reading, libraries and the relationship between a little boy and his rather special dog.

Great story that explains why we all like reading through the character of a dog. As always, love the rhyming and the illustrations, and the lovable character of the dog.

May be particularly good for a dog fan who is not currently a book fan.

The cover of this book didn't appeal initially to me, but I choose the book just because we usually love Julia Donaldson books. I didn't tell my son this time it was her book, so he could have an unbiased opinion, and: She did it again! Beautiful book! The story is such a nice combination of interesting things: a very smart dog, school, the love for books, and how libraries are amazing. It shows how everyone enjoys reading books and that if the person can't buy them, then there's the option of going to libraries and lend some amazing books for free! I highly recommend this book!

We recently bought this book and we love it. Although we have many Julia Donaldson books, this one is different. I think it is because it has 'real life' characters that the reader can relate to.
It uses the sense of smell very cleverly to combine that smell of a book that all readers love with the actor sense of smell that a dog has.
This is a wonderful story written in Donaldson's usual rhyming verse.

Another great book from Julia Donaldson. The main character is a dog who goes on a mission to find where the missing books have gone. It's a great book for showing a love of reading, and how there is a perfect place for people who like to read- the library. We lent this to the school librarian for reading time- she loved it!

As always another great book from Julia Donaldson, with good rhyming text and lovely illustrations.

This book gives a good story of Detective Dog Nell who like my little boy loves books and is distressed when the books go missing a great book explaining the fantastic place a library can be giving the choice of thousands of books for free.

My three year old twin girls were very excited to receive Julia Donaldson's latest book as a gift from Granny today. The illustrations are beautiful and full of humour. The rhyming story is up to her usual high standard and the characters are wonderful. The story is basically about how wonderful books are and how they should be available to everyone for free from the library. Anything that is pro-library is a winner in my books, too many councils are having to close them. The story is sweet and funny and the ending is deservedly happy. A great book from one of the best children's authors of this age.

Nell has an amazing sense of smell. One day Nell goes to school with her owner Peter and they discover all the school's books have disappeared! There's only one dog for the job... and Detective Dog Nell is ready to sniff out the culprit! This is a different theme to all of JD's other books, which is great for younger children who are already familiar with JD's books. My 5 year old really enjoyed reading this by himself and discovering who had taken all the books.

Nell is a very talented dog. She loves sniffing out mysteries and also goes to school with Peter to listen to the children read. But one day they arrive at school to find that someone has taken all the books!

This is another great book from Julia Donaldson with brilliantly detailed illustrations from Sara Ogilvie. We love to visit our local library, and visit at least once a week so it was lovely to see a book convey so wittily the joy of a trip to the library. This is quite a wordy book which was great for my four year old twins because they are starting to like slightly longer stories. Highly recommended.
