Another lovely, sweet book by Shirley Hughes. If you haven't read any Alfie books please do- they are utterly charming. The illustrations are beautiful, rosy cheeks and scraped knees- slightly scruffy hair... You're drawn in to Alfie's world- children think- ' he's just like me!'. In this one Alfie overcomes his nerves at a birthday party by helping others.  I try to get the Alfie books out regularly.

This gorgeous timeless tale is a classic adventure which entrances children of every era. My 3 year old son with an older brother loves the idea of being a helper and Alfie's kindness is a great starter for conversations about situations which he encounters days to day. A lovely story for snuggles after nursery.

Alfie has been invited to his first ever birthday party. Initially he is somewhat  upset that his mum won't be staying at the party with him, but with the aid of his blanket he manages to attend. As ever, Shirley Hughes describes perfectly the anxieties and jublilations of children's experiences of everyday occurrences. Very emphatically written and a lovely story for children and adults to share.

This is one of our favourite Alfie books. I think partly because it involves a birthday party, which is one of my daughter's favourite things, and also because it focuses on some of the small worries of little children's lives that are so big and important to them. In this one Alfie is excited to go to the birthday party but is worried about his mum leaving him there. We have read this daily since Christmas (when it arrived as part of a set) and we're not bored by it yet!

My daughter loves these books as she has a friend called Alfie. They are a little long for her really (better suited to pre-schoolers) but she generally engages with them, especially if read at the dinner table. She enjoyed this book as she loves parties, and always wants to read the Ring a Ring a Roses page! The contents of the book are a little dated (you can tell when it was written) but my daughter can't tell and I love reading books which make me reminisce about my childhood! Alfie is a lovely character and a good role model to read about (in this story he helps another little girl who is worried, in the process having to be brave himself).
