Love the pictures in this book, especially the map of the island, lots of detail to spot. We thought the story was very funny, when all the people got the wrong parcels and when Katie Morag fell in the water.

We love Katie Morag. If you like the tv programme then this book won’t disappoint. It’s perfect for children who aren’t usually big book fans but yet you don’t want them to watch television.

This is the second book in the Katie Morag series that we have read (I believe it was the first one to actually be published but they seem to stand alone). We find them fantastic as wind down bedtime books. They are beautifully illustrated but not quite so bright and bold as some more modern children's books. Each page has lots to see and talk about including birds and wildlife and the story is great for bigger toddlers - there's a complete story but it's fairly basic. We love reading about living on an island and we enjoyed saying the word 'boorach' (I had to google it to find out what it meant!)  Personally, I particularly love the fact that the two key characters - Katie Morag and her granny - are both strong, independent women - a great message for kids.

Sophie is in year 1 (age 5.5) and is due to study the Isle of Struray (Katie Morag's scottish island home) after Christmas. (There is a KS1 geography scheme of work linked to the books; see TES website for links). This is the first book she has read (she's Gold book band, but I've seen the Katie Morag books listed as Gold/White depending on the list). This first book is a good way to establish the geography of the Bay and introduce characters - Katie offers to deliver 5 parcels to the 5 houses across the Bay... but with sheep blocking the bridge, her shortcut through the river ends in disaster.... and 5 soggy parcels whose addresses can no longer be read. She delivers parcels at random in haste, but confesses her issue to Granny Island on reaching house no 5 - who sets about to help Katie match the parcels to the correct owners. Lovely detailed illustrations to review. Sophie thought it was hilarious that poor Katie spent several pages of the book mooching around her granny's house just in her knickers, while her clothes dry off on the old fire range. Lovely books of a simpler gentler time.

Granny bought this book for us after a much loved visit to Scotland.  She wanted to give the boys a glimpse of what it might be like to live in a little village in a remote area of Scotland.  I think this book certainly does that.  The illustrations are beautifully sketched and give a great sense of ambience.  The story in itself is funny - Katie Morag sets off to help her postmaster parents deliver some parcels.  The inevitable happens as the parcels all get mixed up, only her tractor driving granny gets the right one.  Not only do the other recipients get the wrong parcel, they seem to receive the exact opposite of what they ordered.  This is a heart warming story about Katie's relationship with her Granny too.  I had never come across these stories before but after we read it, I saw that there was a series on TV of Katie Morag, and heard Mairi Hedderwick on Desert Island Discs!  I am glad to have had this introduction to these books.
