Toby's sister and baby brother love their schools - they smell of paint and rainbows. Toby doesn't think he likes his new school at all - it smells of ogres and he's lonely. He looks and looks for friends but he can't find any anywhere. He finds an alien, a mermaid, a dinosaur expert and a pirate, but no friends! When his mum comes to pick him up he tells her the sad news - but if he didn't make any friends then who is in the playground waving at him? Rebecca Elliott's charming first experiences books, featuring her son Toby encountering new situations, help children deal with new and unfamiliar circumstances. In Mr Super Poopy Pants, Toby got used to the idea of having a new baby brother; in Missing Jack he had to come to terms with the death of his pet cat. Now Rebecca is showing that going to school isn't quite as scary as you might think, using her unique sense of humour and style to create a warm and comforting picture book, which is quirky and funny at the same time.

I read this to my daughter. It's a lovely book even if you're not strarting school .
A lovely message about friendships and finding starting school weird and well ( stinky!)
My daughter found it very funny and we both loved the gorgeous pictures.
There  was so much to look at and some lovely little details to spot and talk about .
I think this will be a favourite for a while .
I would definitely recommend it.

As all parents know the first day at school or nursery is scary for most children. I found this book really helpful with my younger one who was very keen not to start her nursery at all. When I started to read, the first thing she heard was: stinky school and she couldn't stop laughing. We had to wait for a while before we could continue with lovely Toby's adventures. She was very excited about the pictures (which are amazing). It was a book that we used to read for a good couples of evenings. I have to say that this book gave me a good base for talking about fun my daughter is going to have in nursery and friends she's going to meet. I highly recommend it !!

This is a great book for my daughter, as she starts nursery school soon. But even if your child isn't starting school, it's still a great book. The detailed and colourful illustrations were great and there were lots of things for my daughter to look at. I liked the honesty of the book; starting school can be scary as its new and you don't know anyone, but then at the end like Toby, he gets new friends and has fun new experiences. My daughter liked how it described nursery smelling of sunshine, play doh and bananas, she said when she starts she is going to see what her nursery smells like. A lovely book we will be reading often before my daughter starts nursery.

I knew from the front cover and title that this book was going to become a firm favourite with my four year old, anything with the word stinky in it causes fits of giggles in our house. I like that the story is told through the eyes and other senses of a child, I like how Toby describes the smells of the school settings that his sister and baby brother attend and the way his imagination runs wild and describes the mundane details of his school day, from his many adventures to the colourful and interesting friends he meets along the way this book had myself and my daughter giggling. I also really liked the fun illustrations.

This book was perfect to read with my 4y old son who is about to start school - he is super excited and not nervous at all, although the occasional 'worry' crops up now and then.  He is especially interested in who he is going to meet and have as his friends and says that he likes boys but not girls!  I really liked how this showed that there are different kinds of schools (e.g. nursery, special) and how exciting it is to embark on the journey of school life - it reflects how fun it is which is fab if children are daunted by having to 'learn lots of new things'.  My son doesn't think his new school will be stinky and says it will smell yummy! This gives a great opportunity to explore children's ideas/thoughts etc. and dispel any fears/worries/misconceptions they might have - definitely recommended!!

I think that this story sums up how many young children feel before they start primary school. My daughter found it helped her with some of her worries (we read it before her transition day). The images in the story are really powerful and gave us lots to talk about. The illustrations are beautiful and quite unlike any 'starting school' story I've seen.

A great book that teaches children not to be so scared about going up to big school. My three year old twin girls found the illustrations very interesting and the simple story funny. A lovely book all round.

This is a story about a child starting a new school. We found it a bit random at the start but once the story got going we could see where it was heading. My children enjoyed it but I don't think it will be one they come back to time and time again.
I have new children starting in my class in September and I'm going to use this as a social story to help them settle in.

A quirky book based on a child feeling negative towards starting a new school. Perfect subject for us as my son will be starting pre-school in September (which is bringing him a lot of mixed emotions of excitement and anxiety). I wasn't too keen on the book if I am honest, despite it having an imaginative take on the subject. But my son quite enjoyed it and was very interested in the illustrations - which are lovely and colourful. Not sure it will be a favourite that will be read over and over again though.
