I think that everyone is familiar with this story and this version is particularly lovely. Mother Duck lays a lot of eggs and out of one hatches an "ugly" duckling. The other ducks (and other animals) make fun of how he looks and how clumsy he can be but he grows into a beautiful, elegant swan. At the age of 3, I'm not really sure how much of the underlying story my son understood but it's definitely one that I will continue to read to him.

These are stories that every child grows up with, and this version didn't disappoint. My little boy enjoyed the story, so much we read it again and every bedtime since it arrived. He loved the ending and was amazed how the ugly duckling had changed. The illustrations are great and grab your attention. We can't fault this book, a perfect introduction to the world of fairy tales.

A great take on a classic fairy tale.  When one egg hatches a duckling unlike the rest, mother duck tries to include him.  But this clumsy duckling never really fits in.  Alone the duckling hides away until something magnificent emerges.  A beautiful take with fun and colourful pictures.  A lovely book to keep the classic fairytales alive.

We recently won this book in your give away and it is delightful. The children are familiar with the story, I sing the song from the film regularly, and they loved the beautiful illustrations. Lots of oohing and ahhing over very cute drawings and frowning at unkind comments. The 4 year old was a bit concerned at the duckling being left behind and spending winter alone but we talked through this. It prompted discussion about animals growing up,and being able to look after themselves, quicker than children. Also about being kind to others and not saying nasty things.
A beautiful book which sticks to the original story. Thank you

My daughters really enjoyed this retelling of the classic tale and I quite enjoyed reading it. But I've been left irritated by the unnecessarily obvious girl and boy ducklings!

Early on in the book the ducklings are shown hatching. The boy ducklings hatch from blue eggs and have no eyelashes, while the girl ducklings hatch from pink eggs and are born with pretty bows in their hair and lovely luscious eyelashes! It is just so unnecessary and needlessly reinforces outdated gender stereotypes.

It has left me wishing I hadn't read it to my daughters. Very disappointing.
