Every morning, a very large and very snappy crocodile shouts this selfish message: 'Stay away from my river! It's MY river! If you come in my river, I'll eat you all!' The animals in the forest don't know what to do. They are frightened of the crocodile. Even the fish, tadpoles, frogs, crabs and crayfish stay out of the water. Until one day the creatures are woken by a loud groaning sound which turns out to be the selfish crocodile in a lot of pain, and the smallest of them all, a little mouse, finds a way to solve their snappy dilemma! Astoundingly bright, bold illustrations bring to life all the wonderful creatures of the forest in a rainbow of colours.

A great read with easy to understand pictures that illustrate the story well.  The crocodile thinks he owns all of the river and won't share with the other animals.  One day he has a bad tooth ache and a little mouse comes to help him.  It's a great moral story to show how sharing things helps to build friendships and everyone needs help sometimes

My daughter loves this book. She's 6. She has remembered it ever since she was about 2 years old and always brings this book to me for reading. (Even though she can read it herself). It's a good book with good morals and fun if you use different voices like we do.

This book has a great story line and also learns the children why looking after your teeth is important. A crocodile thinks he owns the jungle and won't share the rivers and lakes with the other animals. One day they wake up to hear a groaning sound and go looking for the sound. They soon find it's the crocodile with toothache but they are all scared to help him. Except one, a little mouse. Children will fall in love with the book and has such a lovely ending

We discovered this book after finding a spin-off book 'the Selfish Crocodile counting book' in a charity shop and liked the pictures so we bought the original. It's a fairly simple, moral tale about empathising with people and being friends even if sometimes people aren't immediately appealing (like the scary croc). My daughter loves the crocodile pictures and keeps asking for this book.

This is another one of my favourite books when I was little.  It shows children that you can be friends if you try. I like the little mouse most in this book.  Lots of little children would like this book especially when it is read aloud.

A very grumpy crocodile lives in a river. He insists that it is his and won't let any of the other animals or fish share it with him. But then one day he wakes up with a terrible toothache and mouse comes along to help him out. He soon realises how selfish he has been and invites everyone back to the river.

I saw this book in the library and borrowed it because one of my four year old twins is terrible at sharing and taking turns. I hoped that reading this book may help her see the perspective of others and how they will feel when she won't let them have a turn on the swing or share the dolls. Unfortunately she absolutely insists that the crocodile was right to not share the river! So it didn't work for us. But it was still an enjoyable story to read.
