My 3year old chose this from the library. I enjoyed reading this with her, as I remembered reading this when I was a child. It's a simple book, would be great for those who have just learnt to read. Rosie the hen goes for a walk,  and she isn't aware that a fox is following her. But the fox is really clumsy, and Rosie gets home in time for dinner, completely bone the wiser. My daughter thought that all the things that happened to the fox whilst following Rosie, were funny.

A really sweet book with hardly any words. Rosie the hen goes for a walk but a hungry Fox tries, and fails, to catch her. A perfect first book to share with an older baby but also great for toddlers and preschoolers. My almost four year olds, still find it hilarious.

This is the first book that my five year old learnt to read entirely independently. It is a very simple, but clever little book - the words tell a simple story, while the lovely illustrations turn it into an adventure / comedy.
We have read this dozens of times, and my five and three year old always enjoy Rosie's lucky escape!

Celebrating 40 years is some accomplishment.  I wonder if Pat Hutchins has any idea when she created it.

I agree with everything the other reviewers have said.  There is the tension created by the hen blithely marching around the farm one step away from death which is stalking her in the form of the fox.  There is also something deeply enigmatic about the hen.  Can she really be oblivious to her would-be murderer, breathing down her neck?  Perhaps she is the devious one, setting up trap after trap for the fox to fall into.

And then there are the 60s illustrations.  I think this is what has made it last.  You can't forget them because they are so unlike anything else.  It was her first book, and probably her best.  After this she largely turned her back on this style...sadly.

Rosie the hen goes for a walk around the farm and is back home in her coop in time for dinner. And, if you just read the words, that's it. However, there is a whole other story in the pictures. This book is a great example of a story where illustrations do so much more than merely accompany the text. You see, all the time that Rosie is on her walk, she is being pursued by a hungry fox. She is blissfully unaware of this, and of the chaos that befalls her would-be predator, and it's here that the humour lies. Rosie's Walk is fun and action packed - a great story to read aloud.
