A "hole" lot of fun!

Today my daddy said to me, "It's time you learnt to peck a tree." Little Woodpecker has just learnt how to peck and - ooh! yippee! - what fun it is! Off he goes, on his first big pecking adventure, and he peck, peck, pecks his little heart out. He pecks the hat and then the mat, the tennis racket AND the jacket... just LOOK at all the holes he has made! Comical, contemporary and original! A stunning new picture book title from Lucy Cousins, with colour so exuberant it leaps right off the page.

My daughter was drawn to this book and had so much fun poking her little fingers through all the "peck" holes the baby bird had made!  A really entertaining book

This is a fantastic book!  We have the board book version, and it has little holes to find with your fingers on each page.  My LO loves feeling the pages and finding all the holes, although sometimes I help her by putting my hand underneath to show her the colour change.  The story is fast paced, and for once about a daddy rather than a mummy, which pleases my husband no end!  The daddy encourages the baby woodpecker to learn to peck holes, and the baby then flies off to a house and pecks holes in everything!!  The text is gently rhyming and the illustrations are very bright and colourful.  We read it over and over and over again on a daily basis.

My daughter loves this book. The illustrations are really bright and cheerful, and the holes in every page caught her imagination. The story is about a young woodpecker who is a very enthusiastic about pecking. We really enjoyed reading about all the unusual things he chose to peck.

We LOVE this book! My Grandad bought it for my son over a year ago and it's been a regular read ever-since.

The story is about a young woodpecker who is learning to peck a tree. His Dad teaches him how at the beginning then he flies off to practice. He pecks holes through all sorts of things as we follows him through his day until it's time to go home to bed.

The story is excellent for building vocabulary - eacpecially that around houses as he finds a house, goes inside and works his way through a few of the rooms. It's an exuberant story with loads of momentum; I love the ending when his Dad tucks himself up in bed and they share a sweet moment.

The illustrations are fantastic; they are bright, bold and very eye-catching. They caught my toddler's attention immediately. I like that they're big; they take up a whole page and sometimes a little more, because of this they are perfect to examine in detail together. The fact they are so boldly coloured makes them great opportunities to explore colours together.

I love that they have put holes in the pages to show where the woodpecker has been pecking; it's a fun, novel aspect and fasinates my toddlers. They love to poke their fingers through the holes and point them out when they spot them. It's a lovely way of focussing attention continuously on the book - especially for little ones who's attention span is a little more limited.

This is a fantastic book that I can't recommend highly enough!

This book is a hidden gem. I am so surprised that it isn’t on supermarket shelves as it is so appealing to little ones: bright colours, holes where the woodpecker has pecked and wonderful rhythm and rhyme. I have been reading this book to my little boy for several years now (and I know it word for word). I love how the story is about a father and son/daughter as opposed to the more stereotypical relationships often conveyed in stories.

This is my daughters favourite book. She loves stroking the little woodpecker and likes it when I tap the pages where the woodpecker has pecked the holes. The story is fun to read and the words gave a nice rhythm to them.

We have the board version of the book and it’s very robust for little fingers to play with and find all the holes.
