One tiny snail longs to see the world and hitches a lift on the tail of a whale. Together they go on an amazing journey, past icebergs and volcanoes, sharks and penguins, and the little snail feels so small in the vastness of the world. But when disaster strikes and the whale is beached in a bay, it's the tiny snail who saves the day. The Snail and the Whale is a delightful tale of adventure and friendship by the award-winning team behind The Gruffalo , Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler.

Lovely illustrations, with good details. My oldest grandson age 5 found this more suitable, than my 2. Year old grandson. Good story, good use of rhyme.

We adore Julia Donaldson books and this is a particular favourite of ours. I love the adventure plot and the very subtle environmental message captured on the pages with beautiful illustrations and a rhyming narrative.

My daughter was lucky enough to get a set of Julia Donaldson board books as a present. The Snail and the Whale is far and away our favourite. The illustrations are beautiful and really caputre the magic of the world using deep, vibrant colours. The text is a lovely poem which broaches the topics of being different from the crowd and embarking on adventures.  This is one we will keep for many years to come.

Possibly my favourite Donaldson/scheffner story. It’s about a little sea snail who longs to see the world so decides to hitch a ride on an enormous humpback whale. They go on to have adventures all around the world until the whale ends up beaches and in des patate need of help. Luckily his little hitchhiker is ready and willing and proves size doesn’t matter when you have a friend in need. A lovely book, we’ve been reading it for years but I decided to introduce my 3 year old to it as we are going to see the stage version on the weekend

The illustrations are beautifully done with bright colourful pictures. The story flows nicely and the repetition is great for little ones learning to read and recognise words.

The book is about a snail who is bored of living on a rock and dreams about big adventures out in the world, so when a whale offers to take him along for a ride, we see their journey through the different climates and landscapes of the world (as much as can be accessed from the sea/ocean).
