A string of paper dolls go on a fantastical adventure through the house and out into the garden. They soon escape the clutches of the toy dinosaur and the snapping jaws of the oven-glove crocodile, but then a very real pair of scissors threatens.

The Paper Dolls is a stunning, rhythmical story of childhood, memory and the power of imagination from the author of The Gruffalo , and illustrating talent Rebecca Cobb.

A simple but lovely story about a girl who makes paper dolls with her mother and makes up adventures for them to go on, before doing the same for her own daughter in the future.  Gently repetitive elements make it an easy read.  I had read it to my 2yo daughter for her to enjoy the pictures but my 5 year old loved it when I didn't expect him to! He loved the silly names of the characters!

A lovely story about a little girl and her paper dolls she made with her mother. They have brilliant names (we live Jackie the Backy) and go on fabulous adventures. A simple story which is easy to read, coupled with beautiful illustrations. Another fantastic book from Julia.

Once again Julia Donaldson shows what a great author she is, this story skips off the pages as you read just like the paper dolls the little girl makes with her mother in the story.
A lovely story with beautiful illustrations by Rebecca Cobb who my son was lucky enough to meet.

This is such a lovely story about imagination and creativity.  Everytime I read it my daughter wants to make paper dolls so great for encouraging role play. The illustrations are sweet and the ending always brings a tear to my eye.

Modern classic.
Little girl makes paper dolls with her mum, and describes the adventures they do on... amid the repeated refrain of "you cant catch us, oh no no no, we're holding hands and we wont let go" which my daughter quickly joined in on. The boy (brother?) eventually gets his hands on the girl's dolls and snips them into a million pieces.... while they are gone, the memory remains .... and is there forever.... leading the little girl to make them again (if slightly different) with her own daughter. A real tear-jerker for the parents reading it.... with a real "circle of life theme".... the memory of a kind but parted grandma... through to repeating an activity with her own daughter (that her mother did with her, and that the grandmother likely did with her.... etc). We were lucky to see the Polka Theatre's adaption of this - if you get a chance to see it, do go.

A touching and lovely story for parents and kids. This is my first Julia Donaldson's story that isn't done with Axel Scheffler and I was curious to read it and see how it would go: and yes, she totally did it again! It's a very different style, but so lovely, simple and beautiful! There aren't so many rhymes like the other books, but lots of repetitive parts, which makes it nice and easy to read for the kids. The illustration also matches very well what the story wanted to show.

It's mainly about how simple things like paper dolls can be used to play and build on our imagination, and create life changing memories that can be passed from our kids to their own kids when they grow up. It shows also that paper dolls (and toys really) don't last forever, but the lovely memories will always be there.

This is a beautiful and touching story. We love Julia Donaldson's books and so happily chose this one. The story follows a little girl making paper chain dolls with her mum's help. The little girl decorates them and gives them each a name. We then follow the paper dolls and the girl on their adventures. The little girl's imagination inspires their adventures with a toy dinosaur trying to get the paper dolls and a toy bus helping the dolls reach the next scene of a farmyard and dancing pigs. The paper dolls are sometimes chased by a dinosaur or a tiger but always run away together to reach safety. That is until some very real scissors appear. The rest of the story takes an unexpectedly thoughtful and emotional turn. A happy and light story becomes slightly sad and reflective but leaves you with a sense of hope and happiness for the future. A wonderful life lesson and a wonderful book to share with children.

Absolutely lovely book. So sweet and actually surprisingly deep without you even realising. Eyes watered the first time I read it to my boys. A truly beautiful book - one of my all-time favourites from Julia Donaldson. I'd highly recommend it.

I like the bit when the paper dolls flew into the little girls memory . I also liked the bit when the girl grew into a mum and helped her own little girl make some paper dolls. I found this book interesting.

I love the sentiment of this book, and how it teaches children that even when things have gone from our lives, the memories will stay forever. It took a little explaining to my children but once they understood the concept, it started conversations about loved ones that have passed.

A lovely story of a little girl who allows her imagination to take her paper dolls through adventures.  Lovely illustrations that make you look twice for the little details.  It's a heart warming story that teaches children that memories live on.  It's also sparked creative play making our own paper dolls to take on adventures.  A beautiful rhyming book.

As with any Donaldson book half the beauty of this story is the wonderful cadence when read aloud. My daughter loves this book and it really captures her imagination. We have had it since she was 2 and now just turning 4 it is still a firm favourite.
It's a wonderful book that depicts that anything from objects to people may not always be physically present in our life but are always safe in our memories.
Another hit!

When I saw this book recommended I thought that Leo would enjoy it as he loved The Everywhere Bear by Julia Donaldson & Rebecca Cobb. He wasn't initially taken with the title or cover however since reading it he's barely put it down. He particularly loved the repetition of 'You can't catch us. Oh no no no! We're holding hands and we won't let go.' He found the different things the dolls got up to with the little girl really funny.

This is a beautiful and heart-warming tale that gets better and better each time you read it. A girl makes paper dolls with her mother, and describes the adventures that they go on. The tale touches on loss and the passing of time with a gentle and sympathic manner. My son loves this tale, and after our first reading of it, he was inspired to make his own paper dolls and had much fun playing with them. A truely beautiful book.

This is a fantastic book!

I was delighted to find this in the charity shop (in pristine condition) and my eldest daughter was pretty pleased too. She absolutely loved this book and we read it three times in one sitting.

The story is all about paper dolls
a young girl makes. They each have funny memorable names and they bring much joy to their maker. In fact they bring so much joy that the art of making paper dolls continues and as the young girl grows up she shares the joy with her loved ones also.

The illustrations are adorable in this book and my daughter and I are big fans of both Julia Donaldson and Rebecca Cobb.

A lovely read which I'm sure your little ones will enjoy.

We enjoyed reading this one, especially singing the song. We liked finding the things listed on the memories page and found this book useful when our goldfish died recently! I was able to point out the goldfish in the story and we talked about how even though it wasn't here anymore we still had it in our memory.

Another beautiful Julia Donaldson book, about a little girl and her paper dolls who have all sorts of adventures. From a parent's point of view, its about your children growing up too - and I sobbed when I read it for the first time. A must have book for any house!

We brought this book as part of a Julia Donaldson bundle. I'm very happy that this story was included. I'd never heard of it before.
It's a lovely story about a girl who makes paper dolls with her mummy. We love the rhyming words and it's actually a lovely story. It can be tricky reading some parts as its kind of a tongue twister.
Has beautifully drawn pictures to go along with the story, it's a big hit with my daughter. Highly recommended

I bought this book as we have a whole collection of Julia Donaldson books which we love.  I don't like the illustrations as much as the Axel Scheffler ones but they are still sweet.  It's a story of a girl who uses her imagination to go on a story with her paper dolls.  It's very popular and I imagine my little one might like it more when she's older as we could make paper dolls of our own.  I have heard some parents feel quite emotional about it (the little girls grows up and has a little girl of her own and finds her granny in her memories) but despite being fairly prone to sentamentality myself I wasn't very moved by it.  I think it's one for us to put aside for a year or two and try again.

Lovely book but didn't manage to keep my children engaged with it and they haven't asked to read it again.

I think the illustration could have been more interesting and bold for the age group it is trying to sell to.

However it is a nice read, relaxing.
