We are using this book for a three week unit as part of our topic on hot and cold places. My year 1 class have loved it (I didn’t just choose it because I love penguins...but that has certainly helped get the. Engaged!) we loved the story and it has helped us to learn how we can find out new information, where different places are in the world and where penguins traditionally belong.

Lost and Found is a story of friendship. When the Boy finds a penguin at his door he sets about trying to find out where it came from. They travel the world with the boy telling stories all the way...and after leaving the penguin at the South Pole he realises something is missing from his journey home.

Ultimately, the children are going to write their own story about a lost animal using Lost and Found as a starting point. For now though, we’re enjoying retelling and acting out in so many different ways.

The simple language and beautiful illustrations make it great for a class of mostly EAL students and I know I’ll use this again with a class in the future.

A boy opens the door one day to find a penguin standing there.... assuming it is lost, the boy resolves to help it find its way home..... ultimately rowing his small boat to the South Pole. Over the course of the journey, the pair forge a strong friendship... and both are sad to part. On his way home, the boy realises the penguin was not lost at all, but was lonely... so in finding him had found "his home".... so decides to turn the boat around. Meanwhile the penguin has made a make-shift boat from his umbrella to try and follow the boy. The pair are reunited... and have further adventures in other books.
We got the book in Christmas 2014 when my then nr 2 yr old was obsessed with penguins (thanks to the John Lewis Christmas advert.... which I wager was heavily influenced by this book!). It remains a firm favourite. If you are lucky enough to find the Oliver Jeffers exhibition that the Discovery reading centre put together - do go - there are several scenes from this book depicted... so your child can put on a wooly hat and red jumper and hop in the boat with penguin, and pose for a photo by the South Pole sign ;o) (We saw it at the Storybarn in Liverpool: http://thestorybarn.org.uk/oliverjeffers/)

Simple, beautiful illustrations make this a book suitable for 0-8 year olds, the younger ones loving the pictures and older ones understanding the story of loneliness and friendship. A great Christmas day read. Jamie is now snuggled up in bed with his toy penguin.

I had never heard about this book but was teaching my class about polar bears and penguins and googled. My class loved the book and it was a great teaching prompt. I bought this book home and shared with my 17 month old. He adored it and kept shouting read and again when we had finished. This is an adorable book about an unusual friendship! Definitely a must read!

Lost and Found is a beautiful story about friendship. It is the story of a little boy who one day finds a penguin knocking at his door. Determined to help the lost penguin, they set off on a huge adventure, only to find that he wasn't lost at all, just lonely and looking for a friend. I read this to a mixed Year 2/3 class and they absolutely loved it.

This book was the focus for the children's craft group that I run each week at a local cafe. It is a charming story that centres around friendship. The story has levels of understanding that can be explored through the text and the simple and endearing illustrations. The book allowed my group to share ideas about friendships and what we do for one another; we considered where the boy and the penguin were travelling to: examined a globe, atlas and made penguins. As with all Jeffers' books it is a story children will want to return to. The children in the group listened intently and the story captured their thoughts and ideas. Wonderful.

This gorgeous book is both beautifully written and illustrated by Oliver Jeffers.  Although a modern classic, it was new to us tonight, having received it today from a book blogger’s 1k follower giveaway!

It’s a simple tale of boy meets penguin, boy thinks penguin is sad, so decides to take him back to the South Pole!  They embark on an epic sea voyage...will penguin be glad to be home?

This story introduces the idea that we sometimes don’t appreciate what we have until it’s gone, that we don’t know what we’re looking for until we find it and that sad and lonely are sometimes different emotions...we were both saddened at the idea that boy and penguin may not reunite!?  A lovely read.

Such a lovely narrative with a heart-warming ending. The illustrations are stunning and it is a book which has captivated my baby's attention since he was a newborn. The message of the story about friendship is really sweet and an important one for children to learn.

My son had read this book at school, and had to re-write it in his own words, so when we saw it in the library we decided to get it out. It was a lovely book that was suitable for both my children.A boy finds a penguin at his door, and decides to try and help the penguin get back home. There wasn't too much words on each page, some only had a few, so that was good for my youngest, and she enjoyed looking at the pictures. The whole story wasn't very long. Its a very pleasant book about friendship and we liked the sweet ending.

A beautiful story about friendship. The boy thinks he’s doing the right thing by embarking on a long journey to return the penguin to his natural habitat. Thankfully he realises what the penguin really wants, but is he too late? You will have to read it yourselves to find that out! The illustrations are lovely and bright. We think this book is suitable for children aged 7 and under.
